‘Youth Radiothon’ @ Pulse Radio 98.4, East Renfrewshire

Did you ever want to be on air and run your own radio show? This is your chance: East Renfrewshire Council in conjunction with Pulse Radio 98.4 will celebrate young peoples’ engagement and voice by inviting pupils and youth clubs from the 12 to 14 June to participate in a Youth Radiothon.
Here is how you can join the event:
You will need a group of pupils or young people (maximum per group is 5) who would like to host a 45 minute radio show.  Each group will be required to come up with content for their show. They could chat about things that are going on in your school, or talk about their interests and hobbies, or discuss issues that they feel strongly about. If you need any assistance compiling the content of the show Zoe Nisbet (Partnership Development Officer, East Renfrewshire council) will visit your school or organisation and talk to you before the event. We would also require the young people to come up with a short ‘play list’ of around 6 songs that would be played during their show on the Radiothon.  Â
All schools and organisations taking part will receive a certificate for their participation in this event, as will the individual young people. There will be different categories of awards to be won for the radio shows. We will be approaching different sponsors regarding this event and are more likely to gain sponsorship if we have a diverse and wide array of participation.

Since opening in August 2007, Kinnaird Primary School has demonstrated a strong commitment to Global Citizenship. It was the first school in Falkirk to achieve Fairtrade status, has achieved two ECO Schools green flags, Falkirk Council’s International Education Awards (Stage 2) and the British Council Intermediate Level Developing Internationalism Award, in addition to Falkirk Council’s Platinum Level Enterprise Education Award.

Right NOW – join Tam Baillie on Glow

SCCYP – The Launch of RIGHT now
This Glow Meet on Monday 23rd April at 11am will give everyone an opportunity to meet Tam Baillie, Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People as he launches RIGHT now – the new phase of his activity for this year.
Be the first to find out about the new resources coming from SCCYP and get your pupils ready to talk to Tam about what he will be doing in the coming year.

Tam will tell them about:
· how he is promoting children and young people’s rights
· the role of Scotland’s Children’s Commissioner,  how you can contact him and get involved in his work
· a wee taste of what over 12000 of Scotland’s 2 to 5 year olds chose to blether to Tam about this year
· what is happening now in response to the priorities for his work identified by 74 059 of Scotland’s children and young people through ‘a RIGHT blether’, his national consultation with you that ended last year.

‘Re-think’ Energy at Bucksburn Academy

Bucksburn Academy in Aberdeen embarked on a Comenius project (currently awaiting acceptance from the North Sea Commission) with several European countries on ‘Re-thinking Energy’. They recently held a conference bringing together expertise from the energy sector and Aberdeen City Council with 134 people attending.
 The project will focus on investigating renewable energies in Scotland, its future prospects and the impact this has on education and employment. All European partners in the Comenius project will look at the issues from their particular perspective and share these findings.

Review and catch-up: Learner Voice and Pupil Participation event, 23 March, Edinburgh

Delegates enjoyed a diverse and inspiring programme covering a wide range of approaches, themes, and initiatives across the educational spectrum. With the opening provided by Professor Kay Livingston (Director of International, Research and Innovation at Education Scotland) pupils set the tone for the day by sharing their vision on the theme with the delegates. Â
The key note address delivered by Tam Baillie highlighted the enthusiasm at all levels to provide learners with the opportunities to express making their voices heard and count, most of all by children and young people themselves.
Tree spotlight addresses provide exemplification and inspiration on ‘learner voice and pupil participation’ across a variety of sectors. A diverse workshop programme allowed practitioners to engage with key themes such as rights education, pupil profiling and sustainability education in more detail, followed by a discussion and networking session in the afternoon.

Students model the UN

This March weekend the Model United Nations programme takes place in Edinburgh, organised and hosted by George Watson’s College. This annual event brings together hundreds of senior pupils and teachers, not just from Scotland and the UK but also groups from Germany, Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Norway.Â
The students take on the role of delegations to the United Nations, and work through a series of debates and deliberations to address key issues faced by the international community. It is a great example of global citizenship education in practice, encouraging consideration of global issues, democratic participation, and intercultural exchange. Students research, present and discuss topical subjects, demonstrating their abilities as effective communicators.
Afterwards: a news piece about MUN appeared in the Edinburgh Napier News. Congratulations to all the participants and the organising team at George Watson’s.

Whitelees Primary School, North Lanarkshire Council

Theme:Â Sustainable Development Education
This event was originally due to take place on 8th December 2011 but had to be cancelled due to the severe storms. It has now been rescheduled for Monday 20th February 2012.
Whitelees Primary School hit the headlines in 2011 when it became the first primary school to be awarded five ‘excellent’ grades by the school inspectors. This isn’t the first time their achievements have made news. The school’s accolades and awards include:
- Finalist, Scottish Education Awards – Sustainable School category (2011)
- Best Green School Award (2009)
- Winner, Scottish Education Awards – Best Enterprise category (2008)
- Four Green Flags, Eco-Schools Scotland.

A key factor in the school’s success has been the way it has placed global citizenship and sustainable development education at the heart of the curriculum to provide exciting, relevant and engaging contexts for learning. This has helped to create, ‘Highly motivated, confident and ambitious children who are keen to learn and to make a difference in school and the wider community.’
This CPD event offers practitioners and school leaders from across Scotland the chance to visit Whitelees Primary School to meet with the Head Teacher, staff and learners and also tour the classrooms, buildings and grounds. A focus of the event will be to identify and share the practical lessons and ideas that have helped the school develop a successful whole school approach to sustainability and global citizenship including:Â
- A sustained commitment to pupil voice with learners being given real opportunities to shape the curriculum and school decision making
- Effective use of the school grounds, nature and vegetable gardens to support outdoor learning and deliver the curriculum
- The inspiring pupil rock band which has achieved notable success through their songs about fair trade and climate change.

Those participating in the open day will also have time to reflect and share their own experiences.Â

DGC Glow Meet ‘Drop-in’ session

Theme: Developing Global Citizens – A whole school approach
Day:Â Tuesday, 6th December
Time: 3.45pm – 4.45pm
Following the success of our first Glow drop-in event, the Developing Global Citizenship Team are once again making themselves available on our new Glow TV channel to share inspirational practice and ideas and also to answer any questions you may have about global citizenship. This is an informal session open to any practitioner or school leader in Scotland – just drop into the Glow meet to pick our brains, find out what’s coming up or tell us what you’re up to. If you missed the first one then click here to see how it works.
Our next session will focus on the potential of global citizenship education to inspire learning across the curriculum. Ann Kay, Head Teacher of award-winning Whitelees Primary School (the first to gain five excellent grades in their school inspection) will share how embedding global citizenship across the curriculum transformed the learning experiences and ethos in the school.Â
The session will open with a presentation from 3.45pm to 4.15pm on How to develop a whole school approach to global citizenship. An open floor Q & A/discussion session will follow from 4.20pm – 4.45pm.  Â
Remember: It’s not a requirement, but if you join us with headphones or a webcam then it means we can have a good blether.
