Forest Pitch – football strip design competition!

Meet the artist!

Join us on 10th November at 11am on Glow TV!

An opportunity to meet Scottish artist Craig Coulthard, creator of the highly innovative art project Forest Pitch. Funded by Creative Scotland and part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, Forest Pitch will culminate in two football matches between amateur players who have recently taken up British citizenship.  At the Scottish Learning Festival in September this year Craig launched a football strip design competition for primary age children to come up with exciting and innovative designs for the football strips that the players will wear.

As an arts project, Forest Pitch encourages debate about national identity, citizenship, the natural world, sustainability and participation in sport.

If you have already signed up for the competition or are thinking about doing so, then join us for this exciting Glowing Thursday to find out more and get some artist’s tips and advice.

Find out more about the competition, sign up and download the design brief and support materials here

And don’t forget – taking part in this competition is a great way of demonstrating a commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic values and joining the London 2012 Get Set Network.  Do this before 16th December and qualify for FREE tickets for the Olympics! Find out more >>

Main focus: Global Citizenship and Games Legacy for Scotland

Tuesday, 25th October 2011,   9.30 am – 3.30pm

Calderglen High School –  the first Community Sports Hub in Scotland, Calderglen has a strong focus on community sport, health and well being and global citizenship.  Staff and pupils will provide you with the opportunity to spend the day hearing how the theme of the Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games has provided a platform for transforming the school’s ethos and its approach to interdisciplinary learning, developing rich learning experiences and activities including:

  • Strong international partnerships through an ‘International Inspirations’ link with South Africa and the ‘BBC World Olympic Dreams’ link with Namibia.
  • Engagement with the London 2012 Get Set programme.
  • Linking school and community sport to promote health and well being and provide coherent pathways for children and young people.

The aim of the event is to identify and share the practical lessons and ideas that have helped the school move forward in its journey towards a whole school approach to global citizenship within Curriculum for Excellence – and also to reflect on the challenges encountered along the way.  Fundamental to the event will be the professional dialogue and exchange of ideas that takes place on the day, enabling participants to network, reflect on their own practice and develop intentions for improvement in their own context.  With this in mind, participants are encouraged to join the Leadership of Global Citizenship online community and share their reflections.

The programme for the event can be downloaded here >>Calderglen High School Open day Flyer_Programme

Scottish schools, teachers are steadily increasing their engagement with Global Citizenship through the contexts of the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics and the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Scottish Government and its agencies work with the various organisers of the different Games to extend the educational dimensions of these mega-events and stimulate school involvement.

A Games Legacy for Scotland blog carries frequent updates about opportunities, events, and descriptions of how schools are taking up the themes. For example: Hundreds of schools have registered with the ‘Get Set’ network of the London Olympics; and thousands of Scottish school pupils will be taking part in sporting activity this week as part of the National School Sport Week 2011.

In addition to the blog, there is a national group on Glow for Games Legacy, giving teachers a number of ways to keep up to date with developments and activities across the country.

Global citizenship – study visit programme

Comments: none Tags:  : Categories citizenship, commonwealth, games and sport, international, sustainable development

Learning and Teaching Scotland has organised a series of open day visits to schools between February and June 2011 to share good practice and promote whole school approaches to global citizenship.

These popular events give participants an opportunity to visit schools across Scotland to see their activities and meet staff, pupils and other community partners.

The schools selected for the open school programme have developed approaches that have successfully weaved elements such as sustainable development education, education for citizenship, international education and games legacy into a wider coordinated whole-school approach to developing global citizens. The programme includes a number of award winning schools and schools whose achievements have been widely recognised.

Senior managers may be interested in taking part in the visits that explore the role of leadership in developing a whole school approach. A number of the open days for practitioners will also explore sustainable development education themes and how these support wider global citizenship activities. There will also be the opportunity to learn more about the activities of Stirling Council and how it seeks to promote global citizenship to schools across the authority.

Further events will be added to the programme in the coming weeks so watch this blog entry for updates.

Places for these events are limited so it is advisable to book early to avoid disappointment.

Please contact globalcitizens@LTScotland.org.uk or Tel: 0141 282 5193 to book a place.

A Games Legacy for Scotland – Olympic and Commonwealth Games as a context for developing global citizens within Curriculum for Excellence

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, preceded by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, present a huge opportunity to leave a lasting legacy for learning – especially in global citizenship. As well as providing a rich context for learning across the curriculum, the Games offer opportunities to develop new and existing international partnerships.

So how can you get involved?

As the milestones pass towards Glasgow 2014, Learning and Teaching Scotland’s Games Legacy for Scotland website provides access to a wealth of material and resources helping you keep track of activities, events and celebrations and share your own ideas and resources.

Find out how Scottish establishments are using Get Set, the London 2012 educational programme to promote the values of the Games.  Why not register for Get Set and apply for the Get Set Network to gain access to a wide range of exciting resources, activities, ideas and benefits to engage learners across the curriculum?

See how Scottish establishments are using the inspiration of the Games to develop interdisciplinary learning and forge international partnerships in our Tales of the Games interactive map.

Share your Games-related work on the new Games Legacy for Scotland National Glow Group.

commonwealth 2010 delhiThe 2010 Commonwealth Games in India are about to begin, with the Delhi handover only a few weeks away. Many schools in Scotland have been using this occasion as a stimulus for learning, and the Developing Global Citizens team at Learning and Teaching Scotland is supporting this activity. We are delighted to introduce a new Games Legacy for Scotland blog, which will feature posts from Scots participating in the Games and the handover ceremonies – such as the young Scots who travel to Delhi as ‘Interaction Ambassadors’.

The Teachers TV online service has a new short video about the Games, in its ‘Learning from the News’ series about how students can gain from coverage of topical news stories.

International Sports and Games

icg2011Lanarkshire in Scotland is hosting the ’2011 International Children’s Games’ which will bring thousands of youth sport competitors from over 70 countries to South and North Lanarkshire next summer. An article in the Evening Times, “On your marks for Children’s Games in Scotland”, covers aspects of early work as the two Lanarkshire Councils seek to maximise the benefits of bringing these Games to the country. International events such as this help to engage young people in sporting activity and intercultural dialogue, but also offer a great opportunity for school students to consider issues of global citizenship. For example, travel to the Games can stimulate discussion about sustainable development, and the manufacture of sporting kit can be tied in with discussion about ethical production and trade. Also, there will be local television and online video coverage, some already available on a South Lanarkshire YouTube channel, which opens up opportunity for media studies.

Glasgow is to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and this sporting celebration will kick off in July 2014 – four years from now. “And they’re off”, an article in the Glasgow daily newspaper ‘Evening Times’, reports on some of the preparations underway in the city to make the most of the experience.
