Global Citizenship blog
Learning and Teaching Scotland has organised a series of open day visits to schools between February and June 2011 to share good practice and promote whole school approaches to global citizenship.
These popular events give participants an opportunity to visit schools across Scotland to see their activities and meet staff, pupils and other community partners.
The schools selected for the open school programme have developed approaches that have successfully weaved elements such as sustainable development education, education for citizenship, international education and games legacy into a wider coordinated whole-school approach to developing global citizens. The programme includes a number of award winning schools and schools whose achievements have been widely recognised.
Senior managers may be interested in taking part in the visits that explore the role of leadership in developing a whole school approach. A number of the open days for practitioners will also explore sustainable development education themes and how these support wider global citizenship activities. There will also be the opportunity to learn more about the activities of Stirling Council and how it seeks to promote global citizenship to schools across the authority.
Further events will be added to the programme in the coming weeks so watch this blog entry for updates.
Places for these events are limited so it is advisable to book early to avoid disappointment.
Please contact [email protected] or Tel: 0141 282 5193 to book a place.

A Games Legacy for Scotland – Olympic and Commonwealth Games as a context for developing global citizens within Curriculum for Excellence
The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, preceded by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, present a huge opportunity to leave a lasting legacy for learning - especially in global citizenship. As well as providing a rich context for learning across the curriculum, the Games offer opportunities to develop new and existing international partnerships.
So how can you get involved?
As the milestones pass towards Glasgow 2014, Learning and Teaching Scotland’s Games Legacy for Scotland website provides access to a wealth of material and resources helping you keep track of activities, events and celebrations and share your own ideas and resources.
Find out how Scottish establishments are using Get Set, the London 2012 educational programme to promote the values of the Games. Why not register for Get Set and apply for the Get Set Network to gain access to a wide range of exciting resources, activities, ideas and benefits to engage learners across the curriculum?
See how Scottish establishments are using the inspiration of the Games to develop interdisciplinary learning and forge international partnerships in our Tales of the Games interactive map.

MoreThe 2010 Commonwealth Games in India are about to begin, with the Delhi handover only a few weeks away. Many schools in Scotland have been using this occasion as a stimulus for learning, and the Developing Global Citizens team at Learning and Teaching Scotland is supporting this activity. We are delighted to introduce a new Games Legacy for Scotland blog, which will feature posts from Scots participating in the Games and the handover ceremonies - such as the young Scots who travel to Delhi as ‘Interaction Ambassadors’.
The Teachers TV online service has a new short video about the Games, in its ‘Learning from the News’ series about how students can gain from coverage of topical news stories.
MoreLanarkshire in Scotland is hosting the ’2011 International Children’s Games’ which will bring thousands of youth sport competitors from over 70 countries to South and North Lanarkshire next summer. An article in the Evening Times, “On your marks for Children’s Games in Scotland”, covers aspects of early work as the two Lanarkshire Councils seek to maximise the benefits of bringing these Games to the country. International events such as this help to engage young people in sporting activity and intercultural dialogue, but also offer a great opportunity for school students to consider issues of global citizenship. For example, travel to the Games can stimulate discussion about sustainable development, and the manufacture of sporting kit can be tied in with discussion about ethical production and trade. Also, there will be local television and online video coverage, some already available on a South Lanarkshire YouTube channel, which opens up opportunity for media studies.
Glasgow is to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and this sporting celebration will kick off in July 2014 - four years from now. “And they’re off”, an article in the Glasgow daily newspaper ‘Evening Times’, reports on some of the preparations underway in the city to make the most of the experience.
MoreOn 4th June Falkirk Council held its mini Commonwealth Games at Grangemouth Stadium. All 1800 Primary 7 pupils in the Falkirk area take part in this transition event, with each class group given a country to represent. This event takes place every two years to coincide with either the Commonwealth Games or the Olympics, so the 2010 event mirrors the Commonwealth Games to be held in October in Delhi, India.
Each class joined the opening ceremony with a procession around the track carrying flags and banners representing their school and allocated country. A torch relay featured pupils running around the stadium track alongside international athletes from a variety of sports. The final leg of the relay was run by Commonwealth gymnastics gold medallist Steve Frew, currently assisting the Youth Sports Trust to promote active participation in sport. Steve, who was born and brought up close to Grangemouth Stadium, thrilled pupils with a series of handsprings and backflips as he completed his lap.
Pupils then moved into mixed school groups to take part in a chosen sport for the day. These included a range of athletic activities, hockey, football, rugby, basketball, swimming, tennis, cheerleading and even Boccia, an official Olympic and Commonwealth para-sport something like French boules. This enabled the participation of pupils with additional support needs, as part of the Council’s inclusion policy.
This event was part of a whole-authority approach to transition from Primary to Secondary school and also a means of embedding Health and Wellbeing and Global Citizenship in the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence. As part of the preparation, all schools were provided with a CfE planner offering them a range of resources and ideas for building on pupils learning. This encouraged pupils to learn about Commonwealth values, about their chosen country, about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and participation in physical activity. It made learning relevant, challenging, and fun.

MoreA Scottish Government news story comments on the positive outcomes of projects in Malawi supported by grants from the Government’s International Development Fund. These projects contribute to the achievement of the ‘Millennium Development Goals’
Mary’s Meals, a charity which provides meals for pupils in Malawi to enable them to stay in education and improve their learning, is one of the positive examples highlighted in the review report.
In July 2009 a group of Scottish teachers will visit Malawi to support development in primary schools, supported through partnership working between Learning and Teaching Scotland’s SCIPD programme and Link Community Development’s ‘Global Teachers’ programme.
More The Scottish Government has reaffirmed Scotland’s links with Malawi. Linda Fabiani, the Minister whose remit includes External Affairs, recently visited projects in Malawi to see the impact of Scottish interaction.
Another news story gives details of funding for some of these projects, such as the School Improvement Programme.
More The Commonwealth Games are coming to Glasgow in summer 2014. And the Scottish Government is inviting people to think about how to make the most of the event and leave a lasting legacy. A news release gives background information and a link to the consultation paper. In the section on the ‘smarter’ strategic objectives, which concern Education and Training, there are already some ideas for increasing the impact for learners; for example, LTS “will feature the Games in developing resources and teaching materials” and “the roll-out of the Glow network in schools will offer additional ways for schools to make links and share projects”.
There will be international connections and interest from all over the world. What are your ideas for realising lasting benefits from the Games?
MoreWe are inviting applications from primary promoted staff and Headteachers for a SCIPD group study visit to Uganda in July 2008. The LTS International Education website has details and forms, and the closing date for applications is 14th March.
This opportunity is a partnership between LTS and Link Community Development. Participants will visit LCD’s ‘Uganda School Improvement Project’ in Masindi with a dual aim of supporting Ugandan schools in the improvement process, while developing a sound understanding of the process of school data evaluation to improvement.Outcomes for the Scottish participants will include greater knowledge and skills about school improvement and data evaluation; increased professional confidence as a result of mentoring and sharing expertise; enhanced understanding of global issues.
