Marine Scotland Science GLOW Meet
Everything you ever wanted to know about the marine environment but were too scared to ask….
11am - 12pm, Thursday 23 February 2012
Why are fish slimy? What is the weirdest sea creature? Which sea dad gives birth through its mouth? What yukky substance from the sea is used in lipstick?
Around one fifth of Scotland’s population live within a kilometre of the sea and our marine environment is one of the most diverse in the world – supporting over 48,000 species. Despite its importance in terms of our economy and biodiversity, we still know very little about marine life and the oceans remain one of the Earth’s last unexplored frontiers.
Join this interactive Glow meet for a whacky, fun and informative look at the science of our oceans and seas. This Glow meet will be aimed at learners in primary schools. The school submitting the best questions during the Glow meet will win a visit by the Edinburgh Science Festival Marine Detectives Workshop, complete with rock pool and live creatures.
Further resources about the marine environment are available on Glow at: http://bit.ly/marineresources

Theme: Sustainable Development Education
This CPD event offers practitioners and school leaders a wonderful opportunity to visit Garrowhill Primary School – winner of the ‘Sustainable school’ category in this year’s Scottish Education Awards.
Garrowhill Primary is an inspiring example of a school that has adopted a whole school approach to sustainable development education. The secret to the school’s success has been the embedding of sustainability across the curriculum which has had a demonstrable impact on every classroom and learner. This has been driven forward by strong distributed leadership and a positive, caring ethos which permeates the school.
A focus of the event will be to identify and share the practical lessons and ideas that have helped the school move forward on its journey including:
Participants will have the opportunity to meet and talk with the Head Teacher, staff and learners and also tour the classrooms, buildings and grounds. Time will also be set aside for participants to reflect and share their own experiences.

SCIAF’s new ‘Project Connect’ provides a dynamic and engaging opportunity for schools to develop their global citizenship education across the curriculum by linking directly to countries and people that SCIAF supports.
The aim of this project is to encourage learners to investigate, compare and contrast as well as respond to the situations of their ‘global neighbours’. In identifying similarities and differences of the lives of people around the world learners reflect on their own circumstances and become aware of global challenges such as climate change and food production. It also fosters a reflective approach to values such as fairness, justice and peace and allows learners to respond constructively to challenges they identified.
The project relates directly to many of the experiences and outcomes set out in ‘Curriculum for Excellence’ linking to a wide range of curriculum areas such as literacy and numeracy, health and wellbeing, social studies, and RERC/RME. It also provides the backdrop for enterprising activities and financial education.
By signing up for the project you are able to obtain a wide range of support materials, receive up-dates on your chosen country and welcome people from the countries you support in your school.
