Did you ever want to be on air and run your own radio show? This is your chance: East Renfrewshire Council in conjunction with Pulse Radio 98.4 will celebrate young peoples’ engagement and voice by inviting pupils and youth clubs from the 12 to 14 June to participate in a Youth Radiothon.
Here is how you can join the event:
You will need a group of pupils or young people (maximum per group is 5) who would like to host a 45 minute radio show. Each group will be required to come up with content for their show. They could chat about things that are going on in your school, or talk about their interests and hobbies, or discuss issues that they feel strongly about. If you need any assistance compiling the content of the show Zoe Nisbet (Partnership Development Officer, East Renfrewshire council) will visit your school or organisation and talk to you before the event. We would also require the young people to come up with a short ‘play list’ of around 6 songs that would be played during their show on the Radiothon.
All schools and organisations taking part will receive a certificate for their participation in this event, as will the individual young people. There will be different categories of awards to be won for the radio shows. We will be approaching different sponsors regarding this event and are more likely to gain sponsorship if we have a diverse and wide array of participation.
If you are interested in this initiative please email Zoe Nisbet: [email protected]
MoreTheme: Developing Global Citizens – A whole school approach
Time: 3.45pm – 4.45pm
Following the success of our first Glow drop-in event, the Developing Global Citizenship Team are once again making themselves available on our new Glow TV channel to share inspirational practice and ideas and also to answer any questions you may have about global citizenship. This is an informal session open to any practitioner or school leader in Scotland – just drop into the Glow meet to pick our brains, find out what’s coming up or tell us what you’re up to. If you missed the first one then click here to see how it works.
Our next session will focus on the potential of global citizenship education to inspire learning across the curriculum. Ann Kay, Head Teacher of award-winning Whitelees Primary School (the first to gain five excellent grades in their school inspection) will share how embedding global citizenship across the curriculum transformed the learning experiences and ethos in the school.
The session will open with a presentation from 3.45pm to 4.15pm on How to develop a whole school approach to global citizenship. An open floor Q & A/discussion session will follow from 4.20pm – 4.45pm.
Remember: It’s not a requirement, but if you join us with headphones or a webcam then it means we can have a good blether.

MoreAnti-Bullying Week is an annual event organised by respectme, Scotland’s Anti-Bullying Service. The week aims to raise awareness of bullying in and out of school, and highlight ways of preventing and responding to it.
The 2011 Anti-Bullying Week focuses on cyber-bullying. The campaign theme is based around the notion that ‘the internet is a place, not a thing’. Its core message will inform and educate adults about the internet being a social place that children and young people go to, and will reinforce the responsibility adults have to take an active interest and make sure that online environments are as safe as the places they visit in the ‘real’ world.

MoreThis week the World Schools Debating Championships are taking place in Dundee, bringing students from around the world to Scotland to compete. BBC Scotland’s news story ‘Pupils debating in world schools championship’ describes the opening of the event, and the Times Educational Supplement Scotland article ‘Scots vie for world debating title’ provides additional coverage.
It’s good to see Scotland hosting the event, playing a role in facilitating international dialogue and intercultural exchange, exposing hundreds of overseas visitors to the delights of this country. And it’s also great to see Scottish young people competing at such a high level, researching subjects, choosing an informed position, proving their worth as effective communicators by arguing with the best of them! Global citizens in the making.
Participants are updating a blog, so that others in Scotland and in their home countries can follow progress in the competition.
