Global Citizenship blog
Global storylines is an exciting, innovative three year project in which storyline and drama are used to embed an exploration of global issues into the learning experiences of pupils in Glasgow.
Now in its second year, teachers from 17 Glasgow primary schools are exploring challenging global issues with their pupils, within the safe fictional community that storyline offers. Each global storyline uniquely combines global citizenship methodologies with both the pedagogies of “Storyline” and the associated pedagogies of process drama.
Learners are supported to think creatively, make connections, solve problems, and examine values and attitudes.
The event will be introduced by Steve Bell, Co-creator of Storyline, followed by a presentation by the Global Storylines Team on the scope of the project, the methodology, learning contexts and research findings.
Displays and videos of children’s work, and presentations from the project teachers, help to give a flavour of the project.
Venue & Registration:
Thursday 3rd May 2012, 2.30-5.00pm

MoreThe Global Skills Gap
Three-quarters (74%) of the 500 business leaders polled by ICM Research worried that young people’s horizons are not broad enough to operate a globalised and multicultural economy.
Employers agreed with the statement that: “Unless we better support schools to teach young people to think more globally, the UK is in danger of being left behind by emerging economies such as China, India and Brazil”. The survey conducted on behalf of the British Council and Think Global gauged the extent to which business leaders saw global thinking as an important skill amongst employees and potential recruits.
93% of businesses thought it was important for schools to help young people develop the ability to think globally. 80% said schools should be doing more; only 2% said they should be doing less. In recruiting employees, more employers (79%) said knowledge and awareness of the wider world is more important than: degree subject and classification (74%); A-level results (68%); or A-level subjects (63%).

The highly successful programme of Developing Global Citizens study visits to schools around the country continues with Stockbridge Primary School.
Stockbridge Primary School has worked hard to embed global citizenship themes at the heart of the curriculum. This work has involved the establishment of systems which promote pupil voice and meaningful partnerships with pupils, parents, the local community and international partners.
A focus of the event will be to identify and share the practical lessons and ideas that have helped the school move forward in its journey, and also to reflect on the challenges encountered along the way. Time will also be set aside for some professional dialogue and exchange of ideas.
To book, please email: [email protected] or Phone 0141 282 5172. Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. This is a free event!

This Glow Meet on Monday 23rd April at 11am will give everyone an opportunity to meet Tam Baillie, Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People as he launches RIGHT now – the new phase of his activity for this year.
Be the first to find out about the new resources coming from SCCYP and get your pupils ready to talk to Tam about what he will be doing in the coming year.
Tam will tell them about:
· how he is promoting children and young people’s rights
· the role of Scotland’s Children’s Commissioner, how you can contact him and get involved in his work
· a wee taste of what over 12000 of Scotland’s 2 to 5 year olds chose to blether to Tam about this year
· what is happening now in response to the priorities for his work identified by 74 059 of Scotland’s children and young people through ‘a RIGHT blether’, his national consultation with you that ended last year.
So why not sign up and join us for this exciting new SCCYP activity?

MoreBucksburn Academy in Aberdeen embarked on a Comenius project (currently awaiting acceptance from the North Sea Commission) with several European countries on ‘Re-thinking Energy’. They recently held a conference bringing together expertise from the energy sector and Aberdeen City Council with 134 people attending.
The project will focus on investigating renewable energies in Scotland, its future prospects and the impact this has on education and employment. All European partners in the Comenius project will look at the issues from their particular perspective and share these findings.

Delegates enjoyed a diverse and inspiring programme covering a wide range of approaches, themes, and initiatives across the educational spectrum. With the opening provided by Professor Kay Livingston (Director of International, Research and Innovation at Education Scotland) pupils set the tone for the day by sharing their vision on the theme with the delegates.
The key note address delivered by Tam Baillie highlighted the enthusiasm at all levels to provide learners with the opportunities to express making their voices heard and count, most of all by children and young people themselves.
Tree spotlight addresses provide exemplification and inspiration on ‘learner voice and pupil participation’ across a variety of sectors. A diverse workshop programme allowed practitioners to engage with key themes such as rights education, pupil profiling and sustainability education in more detail, followed by a discussion and networking session in the afternoon.
If you wish to catch up on the key themes of the day you will find a selection of presentations and support materials form in one of Developing Global Citizens Glow sections under ‘Learner Voice’.
MoreThe not-for-profit organisation TED is best known for outstanding videos called TED Talks, which disseminate new ideas on subjects such as technological developments and shifts in society. Now the organisation has launched a new education initiative TED-ED, which includes a dedicated education channel on YouTube.
This channel already includes some great video assets for Global Citizenship education, with expert teachers, communicators and animators creating videos which explain important concepts and issues. My current favourites are a piece on how Pandemics spread, and another on the impact of Containerisation in the trend towards globalisation. This bank of high-quality educational digital content will continue to build up, as new clips are added, and forms a valuable resource for teachers looking for a stimulating supplement to school lessons and class work.
MoreToday is Commonwealth Day, a chance to celebrate a global diverse community of nations and peoples with different cultures and beliefs. The theme for 2012 events is ‘Connecting Cultures’ and the day is being marked in many ways, including these:
Glasgow will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014, and there is a growing sense of excitement in the city as the Games get closer. Games Legacy organisers and supporters have joined together to promote the ‘Sport your trainers’ campaign and a fitter, healthier lifestyle. (this author is eating an apple and tying up his trainers ready to go out, so the campaign is making progress!). One example: here are students at Anderson High School in Lerwick, Shetland, proudly displaying their commitment to the campaign.
Scottish singer Anne Lennox will be taking part in celebrations at the Scottish Parliament, and commenting on international work to address the problem of HIV/AIDS.
The BBC website has an article titled “Commonwealth of Nations ‘the club of the 21st century’“, which comments on the role of this international organisation and its appeal to countries applying to join as new members. The Commonwealth has grown beyond its roots in the British Empire and territories, and now provides a wider forum for networking and exchange which assists development and growth.
