Human Rights Education and Active Citizenship Conference, Glasgow, 27 October

A Human Rights Education conference aimed to raise the profile and encourage collaboration on human rights education and active citizenship in Scotland has been organised by BEMIS (www.bemis.org.uk) in association with a number of partner in Glasgow (City Chambers) on Thursday, 27^th October 2011.

The conference is aimed at practitioners and education managers as well as local authority coordinators involved in the planning and delivery of human rights education. It will provide participants with the opportunity to gain an overview of current practice, exchange ideas and reflect as well as collaborate with practitioners and stakeholders on the development of this agenda. New Glow meet - Global citizenship DROP IN

Every month the DGC team will be available on our new Glow TV channel to answer your questions about global citizenship and to signpost you to resources and ideas to help you embed global citizenship in the curriculum. This is an informal session open to any school leader or practitioner in Scotland – just drop into the Glow meet to pick our brains, find out what’s coming up or tell us what you’re up to.

The inaugural session will take place from 3.30-5.00pm on Wednesday 26^th October. The theme for the first 45 minutes of this session will be A Games Legacy for Scotland and will showcase how the London Olympics 2012 and Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 can be used to create exciting learning opportunities for global citizenship activities and interdisciplinary learning. Find out how to get free tickets to the Olympics, hear about the Forest Pitch football strip design competition and how the organisers plan to Get Scotland Dancing.

A general Q & A/open floor session will follow from 4.15pm to 5pm. Put the day in your diary and join us for all, or part of, this event to discuss and share or get help with a particular issue.

Main focus: Global Citizenship and Games Legacy for Scotland

Tuesday, 25^th October 2011, 9.30 am – 3.30pm

Calderglen High School – the first Community Sports Hub in Scotland, Calderglen has a strong focus on community sport, health and well being and global citizenship. Staff and pupils will provide you with the opportunity to spend the day hearing how the theme of the Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games has provided a platform for transforming the school’s ethos and its approach to interdisciplinary learning, developing rich learning experiences and activities including:

• Strong international partnerships through an ‘International Inspirations’ link with South Africa and the ‘BBC World Olympic Dreams’ link with Namibia.
• Engagement with the London 2012 Get Set programme.
• Linking school and community sport to promote health and well being and provide coherent pathways for children and young people.

The aim of the event is to identify and share the practical lessons and ideas that have helped the school move forward in its journey towards a whole school approach to global citizenship within Curriculum for Excellence - and also to reflect on the challenges encountered along the way. Fundamental to the event will be the professional dialogue and exchange of ideas that takes place on the day, enabling participants to network, reflect on their own practice and develop intentions for improvement in their own context. With this in mind, participants are encouraged to join the Leadership of Global Citizenship online community and share their reflections.

Our Changing World - public lectures

Opportunity for senior pupils and staff…

Our Changing World is a series of public lectures at Edinburgh University examining the global challenges facing society, and the role of academia in meeting these challenges.

There is a growing recognition across the world of the urgency of tackling a range of difficult, complex and inter-related issues that impact human wellbeing. These issues include food, energy and water security, the spread of infectious diseases, developments in technology and medicine, and climate change.

The series, delivered by distinguished speakers, focuses on the contribution academia can make to understanding and addressing these global challenges. the lectures also form the basis of an exciting new interdisciplinary undergraduate course at Edinburgh University. More details here.
