The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) will take place in Brazil on 4-6 June 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the historical 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. It is envisaged as a Conference at the highest possible level, including Heads of State and Government or other representatives. The Conference will result in a focused political document.

The objective of the Conference is to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges.

The Conference priorities will include:

  • poverty eradication
  • green jobs and social inclusion;
  • energy access, efficiency and sustainability;
  • food security and sustainable agriculture;
  • sound water management;
  • sustainable cities;
  • management of the oceans; and
  • improved resilience and disaster preparedness

Please get this date in your diary and start thinking about how your school might use this as an opportunity to help your school embed sustainability and global citizenship in the curriculum and across the life of your school.

2012 – International Year of Sustainable Energy for All

It is estimated that 1.4 billion people still lack access to electricity while almost half of the world’s population - 2.7 billion people - use traditional biomass for cooking and heating. Smoke from polluting and inefficient cooking, lighting, and heating devices kills nearly 2 million people every year, primarily women and children.

Against that background, and recognizing that access to affordable modern energy services is essential for sustainable development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations General Assembly in December 2010, declared 2012 the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.

The Year provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of increasing access to energy, energy efficiency, and renewable energy for all. It is also a call to promote action on energy issues at the local, national, regional and international levels towards the internationally agreed development goals.
