The new movie ‘Africa United’ tells a story about Rwandan teenagers making a journey to South Africa to play some part in the 2010 World Cup football finals. The official website for the film provides extra background, production details, and resources for further investigation.

The Development Education Association worked with film producers Pathe and Damaris Global Learning to produce extra educational resources for schools and community organisations such as church groups. These address key themes raised in the film, including HIV/AIDS and Child Soldiers. The online resources include movie trailers, additional documentary video clips, and PowerPoint slides. These will support teachers who want to use ‘Africa United’ as a tool for learning about Global Citizenship.

Learning and Teaching Scotland is planning to offer professional development for teachers which will focus on effective practice in using films for the purpose of global citizenship and development education.

November 30th is the date of the annual commemoration of Saint Andrew’s Day. As part of the celebrations for 2010, the Scottish Government has launched a poster competition for young people in primary and secondary schools and early years centres. The theme is Scotland’s Food and Drink, a topic for which many Scots show a keen interest. Young people are invited to interpret that theme through the creation of a poster. A leaflet giving full details can be downloaded from the Scottish Government website, and the closing date for entries is 12th November.

Learning and Teaching Scotland has developed many resources to support teachers as they encourage a greater knowledge and awareness of Scottish identity among learners. A new webpage to support school celebration of St Andrew’s Day will include an interactive map to show communities where local activity is taking place.

And the latest issue of the magazine of the General Teaching Council for Scotland has a feature based around a panel discussion on the role of Scottish culture in the modern classroom.

Stirling High School pupils have designed and created beautiful mosaic animals, insects and an ornamental panel to enhance the Peace of Mind Garden in Stirling’s historic Kings Park.

The pupils produced the artwork as part of the current local schools and community wildlife and heritage project for the park. As part of this project a biodiversity information panel has also been designed and will soon be put up in the garden.

Stirling High School Senior Technician Trudi Togneri said: “This has been a brilliant project for the pupils and they have enjoyed the ideas been put into place and made into reality - it’s wonderful.”

A Park Heritage Trail Panel is also being designed and constructed for installation at the main entrance to the park.

Global citizenship in science

Deans Community High School in West Lothian has developed a science education award to give learners a dynamic and active way to learn about science and the world around them.

Pupils are encouraged to direct their own learning by both choosing the level of the award that suits them best and the theme and approach for their learning.

Through independent learning and research, learners are given the opportunity to tackle topical science-based issues such as climate change, energy and the environment, and present their findings in various ways including debates, presentations, displays and construction of models.

Pupils are also encouraged to explore ethical issues and issues relating to global citizenship as part of the award so as to better understand the link between science and society.

Volunteering and active citizenship

The CSV ‘Make a Difference Day’ will take place on Saturday 30th October, a celebration of volunteering and community action across the UK. Projects can take place up to one week before and after the main day, and the CSV charity invites Scottish schools to run an event or local activity to improve or enhance their community.

CSV has produced a handbook and action pack to help local organisers develop and run a suitable activity to improve the community. The website has details of how to register, take part and raise the profile of your school or community. An interactive map shows where local people have already provided details of their project.

If pupils get a taste for this kind of active citizenship, next year’s ‘European Year of Volunteering’ 2011 may offer further opportunities for new activities and for recognition of community action.

World Porridge Day” is on the 10th of October, and the charity Mary’s Meals is using the occasion to fund-raise and increase awareness of its work in support of education for children in Malawi.

First Minister Alex Salmond MSP joined a group of Scottish school pupils today for a porridge breakfast, and there will be events around Scotland this weekend.

Kingussie High School in the Highlands has a video clip on YouTube explaining its fund-raising Porridge Assembly held in 2009 to support their partner school in Malawi.

Hundreds of Scottish schools have a partner establishment in one of the African nations, and these relationships can contribute greatly to education for Global Citizenship.

World Teachers Day in Scotland

World Teachers Day takes place each year on 5th October, an annual opportunity to recognise and celebrate the work of the teaching profession, initiated by UNESCO as an international event. The theme for 2010 is “Recovery begins with teachers”, highlighting the importance of good teachers in preparing young people for a world of work which is frequently changing.

Here in Scotland, Mike Russell MSP Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, posted a blog statement about how society values the skills and commitment of teachers.

Universal Education is one of the ten Millennium Development Goals, (MDGs), adopted ten years ago by the member states of the United Nations. This goal is intended to achieve dramatic increases in the availability of quality education for boys and girls in the developing world. Current statistics suggest that the targets for 2015 will not be met, and many developing nations face a continuing struggle to have enough trained teachers for children wanting to be educated. This week the Take One Action film festival came to an end, with its Education strand having enabled many Scottish teachers and students to explore an aspect of Global Citizenship through study of a film. The festival was supported by international development charities such as Christian Aid, Oxfam, SCIAF, Mercy Corps and the World Development Movement (a full list of partners is on the Take One Action site). Voluntary Service Overseas is particularly active in recruiting volunteer education professionals to support education system development in another country, for example as teacher trainers or in an advisory role. Many Scots have contributed their expertise as volunteers with VSO, and bring a strong commitment to Global Citizenship to their teaching when they return to a Scottish school.
