SCIAF has produced a languages resource for teachers and learners of French, called ‘La Vie en RDC’, about life in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It will be launched at a CPD for teachers twilight event in Stirling on 26th November. The SCILT website has more details.

Morag Wells and Nadine Froughi, Secondary 3 pupils from Liniclate School in Benbecula, Western Isles, recently met with Hans-Gert Poettering, the President of the European Parliament.
The girls and their teacher won the visit to Brussels as their prize in the Scottish European Educational Trust (SEET) annual ‘Speaking Competiton’, which is sponsored by the European Parliament. Another highlight of their visit was a day at one of the European schools, where they sat in on a class for English-speaking pupils learning geography in French.
Primary six pupils from Edinburgh Academy Junior School also visited Brussels this month, as the winners of SEET’s national EuroQuiz for primaries. The pupils and their teacher explored the working of the European Parliament in the company of MEP Struan Stevenson.
More A national conference on the ‘Teaching of China’ in Scotland’s Schools is to be held at Strathclyde University on Thursday 27th November 2008. The programme offers a broad range of presentations and workshops, covering primary and secondary interests and activities. The programme and booking details are on the university website.
LTS is inviting applications for a group study visit to Amsterdam in November 2008. The group of Scottish teachers will explore different approaches to teaching and learning about the Holocaust and genocide, issues for education and remembrance, and the use of resources such as historical sites and survivor testimony.
The group will visit the Anne Frank house, the Jewish Historical Museum, and the Westerbork Kamp, and will share experience with Netherlands education professionals.
