The Commonwealth Games are coming to Glasgow in summer 2014. And the Scottish Government is inviting people to think about how to make the most of the event and leave a lasting legacy. A news release gives background information and a link to the consultation paper. In the section on the ‘smarter’ strategic objectives, which concern Education and Training, there are already some ideas for increasing the impact for learners; for example, LTS “will feature the Games in developing resources and teaching materials” and “the roll-out of the Glow network in schools will offer additional ways for schools to make links and share projects”.
There will be international connections and interest from all over the world. What are your ideas for realising lasting benefits from the Games?
More Congratulations to Yester primary school in East Lothian, which has been awarded the ‘eTwinning Quality Label’ for excellent work in its eTwinning project with a school in Finland. The school’s “A Healthy Passport P5” blog is very active, and the children in both schools are clearly enjoying their online collaboration.
Scottish Government has released details of the “2008 Scottish International summer school on School Leadership” in Edinburgh in late July. This professional development event will bring together expert thinkers and education practitioners from a number of countries, and will focus on ways to improve leadership capacity in Scottish schools.
MoreWe are inviting applications from primary promoted staff and Headteachers for a SCIPD group study visit to Uganda in July 2008. The LTS International Education website has details and forms, and the closing date for applications is 14th March.
This opportunity is a partnership between LTS and Link Community Development. Participants will visit LCD’s ‘Uganda School Improvement Project’ in Masindi with a dual aim of supporting Ugandan schools in the improvement process, while developing a sound understanding of the process of school data evaluation to improvement.Outcomes for the Scottish participants will include greater knowledge and skills about school improvement and data evaluation; increased professional confidence as a result of mentoring and sharing expertise; enhanced understanding of global issues.
MoreScottish Government has published the findings of research into the views and attitudes of young people in Scotland aged 11-25. “Being Young in Scotland 2007” makes interesting reading, with two points having a particular relevance for international education.
“Around 44% of all respondents held the belief there were too many immigrants living in Scotland, and approximately 32% agreed that we need to do more to help other nationalities settle here”.
“Around 70% of all respondents said they were proud to be Scottish, but more disagreed than agreed with the statement ‘I consider myself as European’”.
MoreLTS is running a group study visit to Brussels through its Scottish Continuing International Professional Development programme. Targeted at teachers and promoted staff, this short intensive visit will take place from 26th-28th March 2008. It aims to increase understanding of European institutions, education policy and programmes; raise awareness of the opportunities for Scottish teachers and schools to engage with Europe; and explore the potential for future collaborative activities with a European dimension.
