This World of Work Wednesday will explore some of the employment opportunities that exist in journalism. It will be presented by three key journalists live from the brand new GlowTV studio in the Optima.
Andrea Pearson is a journalist with the “Daily What” which is based at the Herald. She is an accomplished journalist who has worked with the Herald for many years.
The “Daily What” is an online newspaper funded by the Scottish Government and LTS and it publishes 5 articles a week and is read by thousands of teachers and pupils all across Scotland. It has also been accessed by people as far and wide as Alaska and Thailand!
Neil Murray is an accomplished sports writer who has written for almost every national paper in Scotland. He began his career writing mostly for the Sun and News of the World before moving on to a traineeship with a Sports Agency. He has interviewed SPL players and managers on a weekly basis, covering top games and dealt with some of the most prominent names in Scottish Football.
Glenn Tam has spent close to a decade working in the media industry in China and is currently Director of Public Relations and Circulation at Shanghai Daily, the city¹s official English newspaper. He will be dialling in from China!
It is an exciting collection of successful journalists and they will talk about their daily work commitments to give an overview of the work involved. They will also outline their own career paths and the work they have done in the past that has lead them to the posts that they currently hold.
It will be a perfect opportunity for those interested in journalism to find out more and ask questions about the routes into the job.

MoreOur next World of Work Wednesday features contributions from three people involved in working with animals; William Steele from Glasgow Universtiy Vet School, Chief Inspector Fiona Greg from the SSPCA, former shark diver Rebecca Shearer-McLennan and an officer from Strathclyde police who works with animals.
Using Glow school students from across Scotland will be able to hear about the wide range of career opportunities that are on offer working with animals.
Not only can you learn about what it is like working with animals but you will also be able to find out some of the skills that are required to be a success in this area. There will also be a chance to ask any of the speakers questions about their job, the skills they require and about how they got a job working with animals.

MoreSkills Development Scotland (SDS) is “Scotland’s new skills body, bringing together four partner organisations with a shared vision to drive forward real, positive and sustained change in Scotland’s skills performance.” It brings together the expertise of Careers Scotland, key skills elements of the Scottish University for Industry, Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
Lynne Haughton from Learning and Teaching Scotland, worked with the Glow team to provide two days of Glow training for SDS on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th June. The training took place in the classroom on floor seven of the Optima in Glasgow. Attendees came from across Scotland including Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles.
There were two aims for this training: for individuals to learn how to use Glow and for SDS to start building a community in Glow. The training went well and the next step is for individuals to build on what they know in their Local Authorities and use their skills to share ideas and network in Glow.
My job, now, is to create a presence in the National site with two Glow groups for SDS. The first will be for SDS staff only, in the Staffroom National Glow group. The other will be for all Glow users and it will be seen in the main list of National Glow groups. Look out for the Skills Development Scotland National Glow group which will be an important place to go to find out about careers and skills in Scotland.
