Glow TV is our way of bringing the National Glow Meets to you from the one, easy to find, place. Launching for the start of the new term, we have a major schedule of ‘programmes’ planned for the coming session, including, hopefully, a whole series of programmes on topics such as: CfE, SQA, Glow, Glowing Thursdays, World of Work Wednesdays, Creativity, Games Design and Moving Image Education.

This is, of course, in addition to the many exciting events we already broadcast through Glow, such as the author events from the Scottish Book Trust and Edinburgh Book Festival, as well as those hugely popular one-offs like the Dr Who event and the NASA astronauts one, for example. All of these Glow national events will now be accessed through the one central place, Glow TV.

We are now using new software for Glow Meet (Adobe Connect) and this software allows us access to a recording of a Glow Meet, instantly from within Glow. That got us thinking that we could really develop the idea of Glow Meets further and offer a kind of ‘Watch Again’ facility, a bit like the online efforts of the major TV channels. Okay, so we don’t have the equipment or resources that the major TV channels do, but we have created an area in Glow that provides users with a schedule and allows users the opportunity to add programmes to their own, personal, schedule when they sign-up for events.

Signing-up for these events/programmes is easier now, too. Instead of having to complete a sign-up form for every event you want to take part in, all you have to do is register once for Glow TV and then choose your username from a drop-down list whenever you wish to sign-up to a specific event. Easy.

It is hoped that a lot of the programmes we bring you will include live debate/discussion on important topics in Education, as well as many online training programmes.We have managed to procure a little room in Education Scotland’s Optima office in Glasgow and turn it into our very own Glow TV studio, which even has a couch and a coffee table, so that our presenters look like true TV professionals in the making!

So, with a whole schedule of programmes you can tailor to your own personal guide, easy sign-up and channel categories to make it easy to find recordings and watch again, Glow TV is a brilliant addition to Glow’s assets. Author Events Survey

Learning and Teaching Scotland has commissioned a research project in conjunction with Scottish Book Trust. The research will look at the impact of author events on the confidence, enjoyment and attainment of young people’s literacy skills in primary and secondary schools across Scotland.

In order to provide a thorough overview, we want to hear the opinions of as many teachers as possible and are encouraging teachers to complete the survey between now and the 11th July.

We have commissioned Blake Stevenson to carry out the research on our behalf. The findings from the research will be published in spring 2012.

Gordon Brown Glows in Fife!

Since leaving No 10, ex-PM Gordon Brown has returned to his roots – to trace the evolution of modern Fife through three centuries of change. Now his researches are to be the catalyst for the launch of a “unique” educational project which is set to roll out not only as a sustainable project across Fife schools but as a potential template to be exported nationally and internationally.

Join Gordon Brown live from the Andrew Carnegie Birth Place Museum, Dunfermline on 25 November 2010 from 11.30am to celebrate the 175 anniversary of the birth of Andrew Carnegie.

He will be launching a unique history project in Fife as he encourages pupils to trace the evaluation of modern Fife through three centuries of change. David Gregory, National History Specialist with HMIe, said the project chimed with the new Curriculum for Excellence and with HMIe’s roll in building capacity to export good practice across Scottish schools. The new curriculum encourages pupils to start local and think global. Thinking about Fife will eventually lead pupils to, say, look at Carnegie on a global scale. It’s about getting history at the roots to enable young people to become global citizens. Join our glow meet and use Gordon Brown as a stimulus to encourage your pupils to explore their own families and local history before thinking global.

MIICE is Glowing on Thursday

Glowing Thursday this Thursday (28 October) is dedicated to MIICE. MIICE stands for Measurement of the Impact of ICT on Children’s Education. It has been developed by a partnership of Scottish education authorities and universities, led by SITC in Moray House School of Education, over 10 years, to address how we articulate what “better learning” is like when ICT is appropriately used as part of the blend of learning and teaching approaches. Members of the MIICE partnership will say a little about the MIICE quality framework, and a lot about examples of where the MIICE toolbox has been a good, quick way for busy teachers to both plan and review the success of projects, large and small, when ICT is involved.

This will be a chance to exchange experiences and reactions with colleagues who have used or tried to use the MIICE toolbox as a basis for planning and/or review of learning and teaching activities where ICT forms part of the blend.

Scotland and the Wider World

Have you ever wondered how the country we live in is linked with other areas of this huge world that we live in?

On Friday 24th September from 2- 3pm join 4 historians from the University of St Andrews who have all been researching Scotland’s links with the wider world.
Each will use a different piece of primary evidence to tell the story of some of these links. The sources they use range from a china tea service to a woodcut and from a heraldry to a letter sent home from abroad. This is a great opportunity to discover how a range of sources can help us discover more about our past and to meet, face to face,
researchers who use this evidence in their work.

Review of Teacher Education

The Review of Teacher Education started in February 2010 and will report to Ministers by the end of this calendar year. It is led by Graham Donaldson, the former HM Senior Chief Inspector of Education. Graham has been asked by Ministers to consider the full continuum of teacher education including: initial teacher education; induction/probation; and all forms of continuing professional development. The Review team are seeking to engage as widely as possible with the teaching profession.

Evaluation of Homecoming 2009: Get involved on Glow!

Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) has commissioned Blake Stevenson, a social research and development company, to evaluate the impact of Homecoming 2009 on learning and teaching. In particular the study will explore whether Homecoming 2009 was a useful vehicle to allow practitioners and young people to engage with Curriculum for Excellence.

As part of the evaluation we are very keen to hear about the views and experiences of practitioners working in schools and early years centres who were involved in organising and developing Homecoming 2009 activities and events.

Blake Stevenson complies with the Data Protection Act 1998, and the Market Research Society’s Guidelines for the handling of databases and confidential survey data. All data will be stored securely, confidentiality will be ensured and all responses will be anonymised. The findings of the research will only be reported to LTS and other partner organisations.
