In June of 2010 when this cookbook was recorded, Hazel Lowe, affectionately nicknamed Mrs Maths by her pupils, was seconded to Perth and Kinross council as a Numeracy Support Teacher. Following an introduction to Glow, Hazel set about discovering how she could best utilise the Glow tools and functionality in her support role. In this cookbook, Hazel gives us a flavour of the comprehensive Glow Group that she has developed which is aimed at providing stimulus and support for numeracy across the curriculum in Perth and Kinross.

Black Linn Falls, The Hermitage, Perth and Kinross

This week’s image was taken by Andy Garnett, Active Schools Lead Coordinator, Angus Council and is the winner of a competition organised by the local authority to choose an image for Glow Light.

The Hermitage is a National Trust for Scotland-protected site in Dunkeld, Perth and Kinross. Located just to the west of the A9, it sits on the banks of the River Braan in Craigvinean Forest. It is home to Ossian’s Hall of Mirrors and Ossian’s Cave, Georgian follies built by the Dukes of Atholl, who had their former main residence in nearby Dunkeld House in the 18th century, to honour the blind bard Ossian. The Hermit’s Cave was built around 1760 for the third Earl of Breadalbane, who unsuccessfully advertised for a permanent eremite. The guide in 1869, Donald Anderson, dressed up with a long beard of lichens and clothes of animal skins.

Also in its grounds are several Douglas-fir trees — one of which was the first tree in Britain to reach 200 feet in height. The Forestry Commission Scotland, on the other hand, gives its height as 194 feet.

Visitors to the site can undertake various walks. The most popular walk is the 1km long journey to Ossian’s Hall.

Originally, the popular riverside path purposely deviated away from the river at about a half-mile from the car park. This was to build up the visitors’ anticipation for the waterfall (the Black Linn Falls) that is to be found a short distance ahead.

Northern Lights is an expressive arts project which has seen schools in three local authorities in Scotland working with partner schools in Norway and Russia.

Irene Pandolfi of North Lanarkshire Council and Ron Cowie of Stirling Council were amongst a number of delegates who in 2009 participated in a study visit to Norway, organised through the Scottish Continuing International Professional Development (SCIPD) programme. The focus of their interest was a national initiative - the Cultural Rucksack - which gives all pupils in Norway access to professional arts and cultural activities in addition to the basic expressive arts curriculum.

As a result of the SCIPD visit, and the relationships established with Norwegian schools, Irene and Ron created the Northern Lights project. The project links schools in North Lanarkshire, Perth, Kinross, and Stirling with partner schools in Norway and Russia. The project aims to develop pupils’ skills in expressive arts, literacy and peer assessment. Northern Lights also encourages pupils to study and appreciate other cultures.

Digital art project supports transition stages for Perth pupils

Secondary pupils from North Inch Community Campus, and primary and nursery pupils from St John’s Academy, have been working with a team of artists and musicians to explore the theme of ‘transition’ as part of the ‘Hooks + Bites’ Co-Create project for Glow. Using creative approaches, learners have investigated what transition means, both in terms of moving on to a new stage, and in terms of their physical journey to a new campus.

sound crew small

The walk to North Inch has been explored from different perspectives, with pupils either gathering found objects in matchboxes; making drawings and maps of their route, or creating sound compositions using recordings they made on the way.

Team work plays an important role in the project with pupils working collaboratively in sound or animation crews, to make short digital art and sound works expressing what ‘transition’ means to them.

The resulting work will be presented at a red carpet launch at digital art gallery Threshold, Horsecross in June, and will also be shown at North Inch Community Campus at the start of the autumn term. It will be uploaded onto the Hooks + Bites Glow Group, forming the basis of a digital art bank for Glow, which other schools in Perth and Kinross and across Scotland can use and to which they can upload their own digital art work.

Plan B Collective is leading this project for Horsecross Arts. An initial CPD day involved teachers from each of the participating schools working together and looking at the Experiences and Outcomes the project could deliver, particularly across Music, Art, ICT and Health and Wellbeing.

Co-Create is funded through a partnership between Learning and Teaching Scotland and the Scottish Arts Council National Lottery Fund.

Mission Impossible Science Challenges

Find out about how schools from across Scotland are talking part in science challenges and collaborating using Glow Meet. From 9am until 3pm today, June 1st, three schools from across Scotland are taking part in the Foam Fire Extinguisher challenge by Kitchen Chemistry. Pupils from Perth High School, Marr College and Calderglen High School will be exploring a range of chemical reactions with the aim to produce foam. The design process will then begin as pupils from S2 – S3 strive to create a fire extinguisher which can put out a fire in the shortest time. One of the challenges they will face is to find a way to keep the chemicals apart to ensure the fire extinguisher doesn’t go off until they need to put out a fire!

These schools are exploring the possibilities of creating their own fire extinguishers through hands on experiments and sharing their findings in Glow Meet. Pete Johnson from Kitchen Chemistry who is also a teacher at Stewart’s Melville College will be working with all four schools to guide them through their scientific discoveries using the audio, video and white board in Glow Meet. Pupils will be collaborating and updating discussion boards in a Science Challenges Glow Group throughout the day to update everyone with their findings, sharing top tips and eventually their finished products.

The fire service will be joining S2 at Perth High School to give a presentation on fire safety to all the schools involved and then judging the competition to find the most successful fire extinguisher.

You can join this Glow Meet now, Monday 1st June to watch their progress. Join the Science Challenges Glow group by clicking on the link below and then clicking on Send request.

A Brief History of Advertising - By 3E1 (inspired by Glow!)

neil_winton-small.jpgLast month Neil Winton of Perth Academy delivered a free on-line CPD session through the English Teachers’ national Glow group. The session was a huge success and one teacher who logged in was Miss Coates of Mearns Academy in Aberdeenshire who was inspired to try using WIKIs with her own class:

The other day, whilst planning an advertising unit for my S3 I wondered if I could use the wikispace for that. In just 3 days the result has been rather dramatic! The task is up and 2009-05-19_161633.pngrunning and the kids are creating their own websites for their very own companies detailing the history of their advertising campaigns. We even have “The Apprentice” style PMs who I have made organisers. I am very chuffed with their progress.

The WIKI has been such a success that in only a few days the class have added nearly 300 different edits.2009-05-19_161544.png

3E1 have now opened their WIKI for public viewing and you can access it HERE. There are several discussion threads open already and the class are keen to get as many ‘hits’ as possible and hear your thoughts on their work.

The English Teachers’ national Glow group runs a free CPD session for teachers’ every month. rob1.JPGThe May masterclass is scheduled for tomorrow (May 20th) between 4pm and 5pm and will feature Rob Marrs from the English Speaking Union giving practical advice on how incorporating debating techniques into teaching can help pupils gain a better understanding of text - for example ‘This house believes that Macbeth was to blame for his own downfall’

You don’t have to be an English teacher to join in these sessions but you do have to be a member of the group! To join click on this LINK, log into Glow and then press the Request Access button.

Finally, if you are also a teacher who has been inspired through Glow to start something new it would be great to hear from you! You can post a reply at the bottom of this blog or email the Glow team at [email protected]

Comments: Comments Off Tags:  : Categories Curriculum for Excellence, Events, Glow Groups, Glow Meet, Local authorities, National Groups, Perth and Kinross, Uncategorized

neil_winton-small.jpgOn Thursday 30 April Neil Winton - PT English at Perth Academy - delivered a fantastic masterclass on the use of WIKIs in the classroom. The session was packed full of practical hints like which WIKI provider was best for educators and how to use the ways WIKIs log changes to track pupil work. Teachers from all over the country logged in to watch and ask questions and the feedback was extremely positive, with one participant deciding she was going to use WIKIs with her class straight away as she had found the session, ‘interesting and inspiring’.
The accompanying Powerpoint and resources for this session can be found in the English teachers’ Glow group and a copy of the session itself will also be available there very soon.
You must be a member of the group to gain access to these resources. If you are not already a member click on the link above and then the ‘request access’ button.

Details of the English teachers’ group masterclass for May will be released very soon. Watch this space!
