MoreLike all Local Authorities, Falkirk Council is always keen to find ways to maximise its resources and enable staff to make the most of their time. Recently Stuart Lennie, one of Falkirk’s ICT Curriculum Development Officers, made an extremely effective contribution towards these things, using Glow.
One element of Stuart’s role is to bring together the ICT co-ordinators for the Authority’s 8 Secondary schools. As part of this remit, Stuart arranges quarterly meetings for the co-ordinators to enable them to share ideas and keep up to date with new initiatives, policies and resources. More often than not, the meetings have not been well attended by the co-ordinators, although not through a lack of willingness. Some have been unable to attend due to conflicting appointments whilst others have been unable to get out of school due to lack of availability of class cover. This has made it harder for Stuart to keep all schools equally up to date.
With schools facing increasing demands in staffing and budgets, Stuart felt that this problem would only be likely to worsen and so decided to use Glow as a way to try to combat the issues facing staff trying to get out of school for the ICT Co-ordinator meetings.
Stuart decided to hold the group’s most recent meeting via Glow Meet. He explains why in the following video clip

MoreFollowing on from the successful times table event last year Tom Renwick (Maths on Track) returns this time to Glow TV to do a fractions lesson at Curriculum for Excellence level 2.
Working with a P7 class in Kinnaird Primary School, Falkirk (though suitable for P6 or S1/2) Tom will use the effective combination of the visual 100+ board and interactive Wee Red Box flash cards which promote ‘working memory’ and ‘processing speed’. However it is not necessary for you to have this equipment in your classroom, you can always make the flashcards yourself.
There will be a short break during the event, to allow you to replicate the flash card techniques with your own class, then re-joining Tom a few minutes later to see further techniques which enhance fluency (the list of 12 flash cards you’ll require can be found on the Glow TV schedule listing). It should be fun!
Sign up and join us on Tuesday 22nd November from 2-3pm.

MoreAs the bad weather continues to close schools throughout Scotland, teachers all over the country have continued to use Glow to stay in touch with their class. Local authorities have been utilising Glow in a variety of ways.
In a West Lothian Primary School, teachers are using a local authority level Glow Group to support snow activities, as well as poetry competitions, snow photographs, snow science, animation and other general snow day tasks. Teachers are using the West Lothian Council Glow noticeboard to leave messages for pupils asking them to go to their class’ Glow Group to find work. West Lothian teachers are also using Glow messenger for staff meetings.
St Margarets Academy in West Lothian are using Glow for support and resources for many subjects including, Physics, Business, Biology, Administration, Geography, Maths, Chemistry, Modern Studies and Sociology. Login to Glow to visit the West Lothian - Sharing Our Learning Blog and find out more about how West Lothian teachers have been using Glow in the Snow.
Dundee also created a local authority Glow Snow Day Group where teachers can upload work for pupils. Teachers have also created simple individual groups called Snow Days allowing other members of staff to contribute work for pupils.
Other Authorities using Glow in the snow include:
• Aberdeenshire – Aberdeenshire launched the M2C Snow Glow Group. Now open nationally, this Glow Group offers a huge range of snow based online and offline activities. Other resources available in this Group include an advent calendar, weather research, art, snowmen photographs, symmetry using snowflakes, templates and instructions for creating a snow journal and guidance on measuring snow depth.
• Scottish Borders – Teachers in several departments in Hawick High School have put work up on Glow for schools.
• Shetland Islands - Burravoe Primary School in Shetland have been using Glow tasks and blogs to keep in touch with pupils
• Fife - Several schools in Fife have been encouraging home access to Glow.
• Falkirk – Glow Blogs are being used by pupils at Carronshore Primary School while the school is closed.
• Stirling - Open to everyone, Stirling Council has made a fantastic Glow blog for pupils to use. Newton Primary in Stirling have also been using Glow to set work for pupil during snow days.

Pupils from Grangemouth High and Bowhouse Primary will stage a music and dance extravaganza on a Broadway theme.
This collaboration allows pupils to celebrate and share their success and we welcome the opportunity to showcase to an extended Glow audience.
Make sure you can join us on Monday the 27th September from 1.30pm - 2.15pm in the National Expressive Arts Glow Group for this exciting extravaganza!
More‘Ring in Schools - Music education through handbells, handchimes or belleplates’’ is a National Glow Group. It is administered by Malcolm Wilson who is one of the ICT Curriculum Development Officers for Falkirk council. Malcolm has a background in both Primary and Music teaching and was keen to start up and run the Group as handbell ringing is one of his areas of expertise.
Context
The ‘Ring in Schools’ Group is a sub Group of the Expressive Arts National Glow Group and is open to all Glow users nationally. Glow users can also access it through their My Glow Groups list. The Group comprises a number of pages and gives information on techniques, teaching tips, history and events, as well as including some fun activities too. In addition there is curricular guidance showing how ringing supports the delivery of music education within Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence. A variety of web parts have been used to add content and enhance the Group.
Text Editor
The text editor web part has been used extensively throughout the Glow Group. Text Editor is a very versatile web part and offers a range of functionality. This has enabled Malcolm to use it to add text, upload images and embed presentations, music recordings and video clips.
In conjunction with the Text Editor, Malcolm has made much use of free online tools such as ‘Sumo Paint’ to turn images into interesting shapes (such as the bell shape on the Noticeboard page) and ‘Create a Gif’ to make animated slideshows of photographs. He has used ‘Scribd’, another free online tool, to upload a presentation which has then been embedded in text editor. ‘Podbean’, a free podcast hosting site, has been used to create a music recording player and again this has then been embedded in text editor.
As Malcolm also uses these tools within his Local Authority Glow Groups, he has included instructions on how to use many of them there. For example, you can find out how to use and embed presentations uploaded to Scribd by looking at the Falkirk Primary ICT coordinators Glow Group, which Malcolm has kindly opened up to all Glow users (staff) nationally
