MoreVictoria Hogg is a Primary 3 class teacher at St. Andrew’s Primary School in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire. She has recently started to look at ways that Glow can be used to support teaching and learning in classroom.
Victoria used a Glow Group and the web parts within in to support teaching and learning in her class and also to run a Healthy Tuck shop with the learners. The cookbook will exemplar this good practice and shows how to re-create it.

More“Through using Glow the pupils were more motivated in doing their PLP’s. We could see them logging on at home and sharing their targets with their parents. By using Glow I was able to teach the children about uploading and downloading to a website.”

MoreThis afternoon Tim Laver, PT of History and Modern Studies at Bishopbriggs Academy, explained how the PS3 Little Big Planet 2 game could be used to further engage pupils in their learning. The hugely popular game, which has millions of users worldwide, can be used by pupils and teachers to create their own games with a variety of levels.
The idea to use the game was initially given to Tim by one of his history pupils who suggested using it to present information about the unification of Germany. After much discussion and research Tim realised the games potential, allowing him to use it both with smaller collaborative groups and in whole class teaching. With the able assistance of ‘Sackboy’ he was able to create his own levels in a game that could be played by his pupils. Yes, the challenge for the pupils was to get a high score, but the content of the game was based around history topics such as the Abdication of the Kaiser.
Tim also explained that the pupils created their own games to demonstrate their understanding of aspects of history by using symbolic images. Pupils were motivated throughout, enjoying the creative process, while researching and learning about the historic topic.

MoreYDance (Scottish Youth Dance) is the National Dance Agency for children and young people in Scotland. It is a leading provider of quality dance experiences and education, encouraging young people to get creative and active through dance.
Through the Co-Create project, YDance is providing continuing support to teachers of Higher Dance at Greenock Academy, Lenzie Academy and Dumfries High School including live CPD and choreography sessions through Glow Meet and pupil and teacher zones with lots of useful resources and helpful hints.
As well as practical workshops delivered by YDance in the schools, participating PE teachers have been meeting YDance tutors every week through Glow Meet for guidance on all aspects of the course, including the four set dances they have to teach. This approach has given teachers the opportunity to discuss choreography, share ideas and see examples of pupil work.
The YDance Glow Group is under development and is due to go live later this month. As well as providing an overview of the Co-Create project and the Higher Dance curriculum, it will include lots of useful guidance and support materials for anyone thinking of teaching or studying Higher Dance. A Pupil Zone will include hints and tips on the course, with practical advice on what to wear and healthy living, plus videos of pupils talking why Higher Dance has been a positive experience for them. A Teachers Zone will include sample videos of technique exercises and set dances, examples of written work and choreography lesson plans, together with support materials on career paths and opportunities for pupils.
For more information on YDance and the support and resources on offer for schools visit their website at www.ydance.org
Co-Create is funded through a partnership between Learning and Teaching Scotland and the Creative Scotland National Lottery Fund.
MoreIn September 2010, four schools from East Dunbartonshire volunteered to attend the Scottish Learning Festival, allowing their pupils to take part in a host of LEGO activities.
To support the preparation of this a Local Authority Level Glow Group was created which allowed the four schools – Bearsden Primary, Killermont Primary, Lenzie-Moss Primary and Oxgang Primary – to communicate, collaborate and share learning.
Find out more about how this Glow Group was utilised in this fantastic four part Glow Cookbook.

On 29th October teachers from as far afield as Stirling and Thurso logged into Glow to listen to David Miller from St Ninian’s High School East Dunbartonshire deliver a fantastic masterclass session entitled ‘Literacy in Action’.
During the session David explained how an S1 poetry unit he was working on led to a cross-curricular project with the Art Department and resulted in the pupils making a short animation film. As well as sharing his own teaching approaches and the Curriculum for Excellence outcomes the project covered, David showed examples of the work produced by the pupils and gave the participants of the session practical advice on how the project was organised. Some of those taking part in the Glow Meet also offered their own hints about the best software they had found for animation projects. All those who took part agreed that the masterclass was, ‘inspiring’.
Every month the national English teachers’ Glow group runs a session just like this one on a variety of Literacy/English topics. If you have a Glow log-in, an internet connection and speakers attached to your PC then you can take part. These sessions are free and are always timed for after school so no cover is needed - you can even join in from the comfort of your own living room!
You do not have to be an English teacher to participate but you must be a member of the national English teachers’ Glow group. Click HERE to request membership. Detailed instructions on how to join a Glow Meet masterclass are posted in the group.

MoreAfter a long summer break I am pleased to announce that the English teacher masterclass sessions have once again resumed. These one hour sessions offer teachers all over the country the opportunity -through Glow Meet- to increase their knowledge through participation in on-line CPD sessions run by ‘experts’ in a variety of fields.
Returning in the first of our autumn sessions is 2008 UK Teacher of the year David Miller who delivered a fantastic masterclass on Robert Frost Poetry way back in March.
His latest session - entitled ‘Literacy in Action’ will focus on an Interdisciplinary Learning project between English and Art & Design called Poetry in Motion. As well as exemplifying the Outcomes and Experiences in English, Literacy and Expressive Arts at Level 3, the session will also illustrate examples of Literacy in Action across a range of other subjects.
The session will take place on Thursday 29th October at 4.30 and is open to all teachers with a Glow log-in. You do not have to be an English teacher but you must be a member of the national English Teachers glow group to participate. Click on this LINK to go to the group and request membership.
The masterclasses will cover a wide variety of subjects and will run once a month as before - watch this space for more exciting events coming soon!
