Glow is proud to host two events to celebrate Holocaust Memorial 2012, which this year is on Friday 27th January.

The first is a live event from Eastern Primary in Dundee on Tuesday 24th January at 1.30pm. During this Glow Meet the Primary 7 pupils will be meeting those involved in the book and flim ‘Hana’s Suitcase’. This amazing story tells of how a suitcase arrived at a children’s Holocaust Education Center in Tokyo, Japan in March 2000 with Hana Brady written on the outside. Children who saw the suitcase on display were full of questions and the director decided to find the answers. The book and the subsequent film tells us what she found out!

At the event we will meet Fumiko, the director at the Holocaust Education Centre in Tokyo and Lara, George Brady’s daughter who also appeared in the film. George Brady, Hana’s brother will also be speaking and finally Larry Weinstein who made the film will be joining us in Dundee.

There will be plenty opportunity for questions for everyone as well. Sign up and join us on the day.

Finally on Thursday 26th January we will join the official Holocaust Memorial Event - Scotland 2012 live from the Caird Hall in Dundee. This event organised by ‘Speak Up Speak Up’ encourages young people to consider what they see and hear around them, and to use their voices to Speak Up against hatred and discrimination. The full programme and the opportunity to sign up and join in on the day is available in Glow TV.

We shared this project with other schools in the authority and also on the national site where different groups can be shared across the country. We feel this is a big part of Cfe and Glow in particular provides the ideal means for doing this. Not only can we set the standard but we can share it. Glow is an excellent vehicle for sharing good practice.”

As the bad weather continues to close schools throughout Scotland, teachers all over the country have continued to use Glow to stay in touch with their class. Local authorities have been utilising Glow in a variety of ways.

In a West Lothian Primary School, teachers are using a local authority level Glow Group to support snow activities, as well as poetry competitions, snow photographs, snow science, animation and other general snow day tasks. Teachers are using the West Lothian Council Glow noticeboard to leave messages for pupils asking them to go to their class’ Glow Group to find work. West Lothian teachers are also using Glow messenger for staff meetings.

St Margarets Academy in West Lothian are using Glow for support and resources for many subjects including, Physics, Business, Biology, Administration, Geography, Maths, Chemistry, Modern Studies and Sociology. Login to Glow to visit the West Lothian - Sharing Our Learning Blog and find out more about how West Lothian teachers have been using Glow in the Snow.

Dundee also created a local authority Glow Snow Day Group where teachers can upload work for pupils. Teachers have also created simple individual groups called Snow Days allowing other members of staff to contribute work for pupils.

Other Authorities using Glow in the snow include:

Aberdeenshire – Aberdeenshire launched the M2C Snow Glow Group. Now open nationally, this Glow Group offers a huge range of snow based online and offline activities. Other resources available in this Group include an advent calendar, weather research, art, snowmen photographs, symmetry using snowflakes, templates and instructions for creating a snow journal and guidance on measuring snow depth.

Scottish Borders – Teachers in several departments in Hawick High School have put work up on Glow for schools.

Shetland Islands - Burravoe Primary School in Shetland have been using Glow tasks and blogs to keep in touch with pupils

Fife - Several schools in Fife have been encouraging home access to Glow.

Falkirk – Glow Blogs are being used by pupils at Carronshore Primary School while the school is closed.

• Stirling - Open to everyone, Stirling Council has made a fantastic Glow blog for pupils to use. Newton Primary in Stirling have also been using Glow to set work for pupil during snow days.

books Have you read these books? Could you write a story in the Scots language?

The author, James Robertson, is a founder editor and a contributing author to the Scots language children’s imprint Itchy Coo. As an Itchy Coo author he has translated Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox into Scots and A. A. Milne’s classic Winnie The Pooh.

A Glow Meet with James will be held in the Writer’s Workshop Glow Group on November 5th at 10am. James hopes S2 pupils will be interested in this session about writing in Scots. There will be a follow-up session on 19th November at 10am. Menzieshill High School in Dundee is hosting the event and S2 pupils there will have the chance to meet James face to face, but pupils across Scotland will be able to join in via Glow Meet.

His first Glow Meet will look at the background to his translation of Winnie the Pooh into Scots, and include: short readings from the original and the translated editions; a general discussion about dialogue, names changes and the impact on the tone of the writing; and a challenge for pupils. James’ second Glow Meet will be a feedback session, looking at the pupils’ responses to his challenge.

Bob Hill’s Glow project is all about collaboration in Glow. It is a great project because Bob aims to involve teachers from all over Scotland in a practical project about our favourite subject, the weather.

bob2.png

Bob works out of Dundee and is in ICT Support for DCC Educational Services. He is promoting the use of Google maps to share information about the weather in Scotland. By asking teachers and pupils to capture local information about the weather and put it in a shared google map which can be found in a National Glow group Weather with Google Maps Glow group.

bob4.png

If you are a teacher Primary or Secondary and not least ateacher of Geography you should get involved. If I was teaching about the Weather, Enquiry Skills (eg S1) or Google maps after the summer holidays, I would seriously consider getting my class to contribute to Bob’s glow group and share my local information with schools across the country. It would be great to view more local weather in Bob’s Google map. full instructions on how to do this are in the Glow group. You can ask him about his Glow group in the Discussions page of Weather and Google Maps or @robthill in Twitter.

You can find Bob’s Glow group in the National Site in the Collaborative Projects National Glow group.

Bob, good luck with a great Glow idea.

At this time of year, many P7 pupils are getting a taster of a day or two at secondary school to prepare them for S1. P7 pupils at Craigiebarns PS in Dundee are ahead of the game through Glow! Two P7 classes and their teachers were able to take part in a series of lessons about Burning and the Gases of the Air through Glow Meet video-conferences with Kath Squire, PT Biology at the associated secondary school, Craigie HS. Some S2 volunteers helped Kath to show live, various aspects of burning. She had also prepared presentations to deliver though Glow Meet’s whiteboard space. The two classes were able to annotate on the whiteboard in different colours, reponding to Kath’s questions and interacting in the lesson. This Glow tool is a powerful way to support transition and help enhance topics which are difficult to deliver safely in the primary classroom.

This week’s Glowing Thursday Glow Meet session will enable Glow users to meet Kath, and also, Avril Martin, DHT at Craigiebarns PS. Avril set up the project Glow Group and arranged for the two P7 classes to participate. If you have a Glow login, navigate to the Glowing Thursday page and read more about the project and then join the Meet around 4pm Thursday 11th June.

Chemical Industry Glows from Aberdeen across Scotland

April 29th saw the first national Glow Meet for chemistry classes. It was hosted in Aberdeen Grammar School thanks to P.T. Chemistry, Susan Davis, and Aberdeen City’s Principal Officer (Education ICT), Richard Elliott, but classes from around Scotland benefitted: St John’s HS, Dundee; Stirling HS; Marr College, South Ayrshire; Lenzie Academy, East Dunbartonshire; and several from Aberdeenshire - Fraserburgh Academy, Aboyne Academy and the Gordon Schools.

Chemical Engineers Glow Meet

Craig Burnett, a recent entrant to the profession, described his path from Banchory Academy to his current postion with Talisman Energy, and also took the audience through the Higher Chemistry content statements about the Chemical Industry.
Gavin Smith shared his vast experience in various areas of the chemical industry with the pupils, and showed the huge responsibility that can weigh on engineers’ shoulders in terms of making sure that plants (including oil rigs) are safe - from design through to everyday procedures.
Some of the teachers who accessed the Glow Meet with their classes have left feedback in the National Sciences Glow Group:

“I used Glow Meet for the first time this morning and I really enjoyed it! I thought the presentation worked very well and I thought Gavin and Craig were very interesting and covered the topic well. I found Glow Meet very easy to use and I was happy to find that you could still join in the discussion just by typing. Thanks for giving me opportunity to join in this morning. I will be keeping an look-out for more Glow Meet events.”

“First experience of Glow Meet a very positive one. Gavin and Craig excellent at giving the pupils a wider perspective on the applications of Chemistry after school/university.
We found Glow Meet easy to use, no problems with set-up.
We didn’t have a microphone and so had to type all questions in - found this a bit restrictive and slowed things down a bit, making the Glow meet not quite as interactive as we had anticipated.
Would definitely participate again.”

“I am trying to push the use of Glow in SHS and it is events like this that are going to make it happen. The feedback from both Chemistry staff and pupils has been great. Thanks to Gavin and Craig and more please!”

If you have ideas for future Glow Meets for chemistry or any of the other sciences, leave a note in the National Sciences Glow Group, or by leaving a comment on this blog.
