Clare Fallon is Principle Teacher at St Mark’s Primary in Irvine, North Ayrshire. As a Glow mentor, Clare decided to start using Glow with her pupils at St Mark’s. Maureen Atkins is a Maths teacher at St Aidan’s High School in North Lanarkshire. She has been making good use of Glow in her teaching. She was involved in the school’s decision to move ahead with using e-portfolios with the S1 year group. Maureen was keen that evidence of pupil achievement that she had captured in the classroom would be available to be used by the pupils when creating posts in their e-portfolios. This Cookbook will focus on the Maths Store Glow Group and on the wiki. You will see a tour of the Glow Group and wiki and also interviews with Maureen where she will explain what she was setting out to do.
This process could be used across any whole school seeking a method to give pupils access to evidence from classes for use in their e-portfolios.

Glow Showcase – Removal of this Service

rsibbett
Comments: Comments Off Tags:  : Categories Glow

A recent review of the Glow Showcase, the service for engaging with commercial partners, has recommended that this service be removed. To this end the service will stop on the 1st of August 2011.
It’s always a shame when things come to an end, but we’ve thought long and hard about it. There are a number of reasons for the withdrawal of the Glow Showcase service which include:
• There are very few visitors to the site
• Of those visitors, few have the budgetary authority to enable them to purchase content
• There is little appetite amongst users for such a service
• Transactional e-commerce websites abound online and there is no opportunity to develop the Showcase service to align user experience with that of these other portals
If you have any questions regarding the removal of this service then please email [email protected]

Margaret Hamilton is PT Raising Achievement at St Aidan’s High School in North Lanarkshire. As part of the many things Margaret was using Glow for she wanted to work on a Transition Glow Group, which she started just before the end of term. Margaret had been impressed by what she saw in the Glow Cookbook, Transition Glow Group in Angus Schools, particularly by the involvement of the S1 pupils and also with their interactive map.

Some of St Aidan’s High School’s associate primary schools are as much as 12 miles away and Margaret was attracted by the idea of being able to use tools such as Discussion Boards and Glow Meet to keep in contact without having to wait for physical visits.

Glow TV is our way of bringing the National Glow Meets to you from the one, easy to find, place. Launching for the start of the new term, we have a major schedule of ‘programmes’ planned for the coming session, including, hopefully, a whole series of programmes on topics such as: CfE, SQA, Glow, Glowing Thursdays, World of Work Wednesdays, Creativity, Games Design and Moving Image Education.

This is, of course, in addition to the many exciting events we already broadcast through Glow, such as the author events from the Scottish Book Trust and Edinburgh Book Festival, as well as those hugely popular one-offs like the Dr Who event and the NASA astronauts one, for example. All of these Glow national events will now be accessed through the one central place, Glow TV.

We are now using new software for Glow Meet (Adobe Connect) and this software allows us access to a recording of a Glow Meet, instantly from within Glow. That got us thinking that we could really develop the idea of Glow Meets further and offer a kind of ‘Watch Again’ facility, a bit like the online efforts of the major TV channels. Okay, so we don’t have the equipment or resources that the major TV channels do, but we have created an area in Glow that provides users with a schedule and allows users the opportunity to add programmes to their own, personal, schedule when they sign-up for events.

Signing-up for these events/programmes is easier now, too. Instead of having to complete a sign-up form for every event you want to take part in, all you have to do is register once for Glow TV and then choose your username from a drop-down list whenever you wish to sign-up to a specific event. Easy.

It is hoped that a lot of the programmes we bring you will include live debate/discussion on important topics in Education, as well as many online training programmes. We have managed to procure a little room in Education Scotland’s Optima office in Glasgow and turn it into our very own Glow TV studio, which even has a couch and a coffee table, so that our presenters look like true TV professionals in the making!

So, with a whole schedule of programmes you can tailor to your own personal guide, easy sign-up and channel categories to make it easy to find recordings and watch again, Glow TV is a brilliant addition to Glow’s assets. To register for Glow TV and then be able to have your own personal schedule and easy sign-up for programmes, click here.

Sharing Instrumental Performance Videos at St Aidan’s High School

Alan Jenkins is a music teacher at St Aidan’s High School in North Lanarkshire. After receiving a small amount of Glow training in school Alan could see that he wanted to make use of it. He wanted to use Glow to share instrumental performance videos with his pupils. Alan felt that pupils will have pieces of music demonstrated to them in school but then this moment is gone and it is difficult for the pupils to remember what to do. He feels this is an issue that Glow provides a solution for.

The Guitar Course

The intention was to let all pupils hear how a piece of music should sound but also to be able to follow along with hand positions and fingering and be able to replicate this themselves at home. This is available in guitar, keyboard and drum-kit. The original films have been captured straight-on but Alan plans to film from different angles to get better views of hand position and fingering.

There is now a large amount of Spanish content available on Glow Learn. With around 150 Sonica Spanish activities available this resource is relevant to both primary and secondary pupils. The content is particularly suited to second and third levels.

The different activities are located in two places within Glow learn – both in the Resources Tab and the Courses Tab. Where you access the activities from will impact on how you can use them and where or not pupils will have access.

2 New Glow Cookbooks - Standard Grade Music – Using a wiki for project work and A Glow Group using a Graphical Interface

Irene Stewart is a Principal teacher of Music at Bellshill Academy in North Lanarkshire. She began using Glow quite recently, encouraged by her own son’s use of Glow in primary school. She saw the potential for her secondary pupils to be accessing materials from home and also to be able to ask questions on Discussion Boards for help with their homework. Her son’s obvious enjoyment of using Glow made her think that her pupils would be motivated by using it.

These two cookbooks show how Irene has used Glow with her Standard grade classes, mainly in S3. The first focuses on the use she has made of hidden pages and a graphical interface while the second looks at how the pupils used a wiki to upload project work for their Standard grade Music.

“Glow Science captivates the imagination”, this statement comes from Katy Sowden, a teacher from Williamston Primary School in Livingston. Katy and pupils from her Primary 7 class were recently asked about the impact that Glow Science has had in their classroom. You can watch what they had to say in a video clip in this cookbook.
