MoreMany of you will have been involved in the highly popular Choices for Life event aimed at Primary 6/7 ages pupils. In May, Choices for Life will be travelling to the Scottish Islands. This will be the last time you can see Choices for Life in its current format before its transformation into Choices for Life Online.
The Choices for Life team would like you to join them live via Glow Meet on Monday 9th May when they will be in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis. Start time is 10.30 and you can join them from about 10am. The format will be as in previous years, but for those who have not been to the event before, pupils will see a live stage show presented by Mark Martin from Forth One. There will be video clips depicting real life stories and a 4 part drama around alcohol and peer pressure. PACE Theatre group from Paisley will perform a live, on stage play called ‘Ready or Not’ and there will be music from Carrie Mac, new boy band GMD3 and MC Enel.
The event on the 9th May will last around 2 hours, but nearer the time we’ll post a running order that may help you to link with parts you’ll find most useful, although we would encourage pupils to watch it all and hear all the messages.
After May, Choices for Life will transform and there will be competitions, opportunities for questions around set topics (drugs, alcohol and tobacco this year) and the details of how you can take part in our live Glow meet in November with Choices for Life Online.
Why not sign up and join this exciting event and find out more about the presenters and performers who will be at the event live in Stornoway? Sign up in the Choices for Life National Glow Group.

MoreDespite a range of excellent resources and plenty of publicity, there is still considerable concern about the dangers to young people of the misuse of modern technology - ‘cyber bullying’, access to inappropriate material, ‘grooming’ of young people etc.
Although young people, when asked specific questions about the use of ICT will give ‘correct’ answers, there is often a mismatch between their knowledge and their actions.
Borders Youth Theatre will work with a class of P6 at Earlston Primary School, Scottish Borders using drama to explore the issues involved and to devise some pieces of theatre which will illustrate the dangers of mobile phones and the internet and possible safe practice.
The drama pieces will be performed and filmed and broadcast live across Scotland via Glow Meet on Tuesday 26th April from 1.45 - 2.30pm. There will be an opportunity for pupils in other schools to interact and perhaps influence the performances.
Although there is no attempt to replace the many excellent sources of information, there will some material available which schools may wish to use to follow up the project with pupils and parents.
Sign up now and join us on Tuesday 26th April at 1.45pm!
MoreThis WOWW event hopes to identify the employment and career opportunities that exist within the food and drinks industry from shop floor employment through to the food technologists and scientists who will work for our major food manufacturers.
Moray where the event is coming from live, is well placed in this field with quality retail outlets such as Mr Royan’s shop through to Whisky manufacturing and wholesaling and retailing with Gordon and MacPhail through to food manufacture and marketing with Walkers shortbread who manufacture food stuffs for a variety of Brand names as well as the famous Walkers Shortbread.
The speakers on the panel that day will be representative of these companies.
The food and drinks industry employs approximately 500,000 people in companies of all sizes, 39% of employees in this industry are aged between 16 and 24. There is an acknowledged gender imbalance with 64% of the employees being male.
Sign up and join us on Wednesday 27th April from 2-3pm and find out more about career opportunities in this exciting field.
MoreBlack Linn Falls, The Hermitage, Perth and Kinross
This week’s image was taken by Andy Garnett, Active Schools Lead Coordinator, Angus Council and is the winner of a competition organised by the local authority to choose an image for Glow Light.
The Hermitage is a National Trust for Scotland-protected site in Dunkeld, Perth and Kinross. Located just to the west of the A9, it sits on the banks of the River Braan in Craigvinean Forest. It is home to Ossian’s Hall of Mirrors and Ossian’s Cave, Georgian follies built by the Dukes of Atholl, who had their former main residence in nearby Dunkeld House in the 18th century, to honour the blind bard Ossian. The Hermit’s Cave was built around 1760 for the third Earl of Breadalbane, who unsuccessfully advertised for a permanent eremite. The guide in 1869, Donald Anderson, dressed up with a long beard of lichens and clothes of animal skins.
Also in its grounds are several Douglas-fir trees — one of which was the first tree in Britain to reach 200 feet in height. The Forestry Commission Scotland, on the other hand, gives its height as 194 feet.
Visitors to the site can undertake various walks. The most popular walk is the 1km long journey to Ossian’s Hall.
Originally, the popular riverside path purposely deviated away from the river at about a half-mile from the car park. This was to build up the visitors’ anticipation for the waterfall (the Black Linn Falls) that is to be found a short distance ahead.
