Dunnottar Castle

Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress located upon a rocky headland on the north-east coast of Scotland, about two miles south of Stonehaven. The surviving buildings are largely of the 15th–16th centuries, but the site is believed to have been an early fortress of the Dark Ages. Dunnottar played a strategic role in the history of Scotland from the Middle Ages through to the Enlightenment, because of the location: it overlooked the shipping lanes to northern Scotland; and is situated on a narrow coastal terrace that controlled land access to the coastal south via Portlethen Moss to Aberdeen during the medieval period. The site, owned by private interests is open to the public, visited annually by hundreds of thousands of tourists.

The ruins of the castle are spread over 3 acres, surrounded with steep cliffs that drop to the North Sea 50 metres below. The L plan castle is accessed via a narrow strip of land, joining the mainland to a steep path leading up to the gatehouse. The cliff and headland formations, which extend to the north and south, is a notable bird sanctuary to pelagic birds.

In summer 2009, a landscape photograph of the castle was chosen as an official desktop wallpaper and included with the Microsoft operating system Windows 7, thus bringing an image of the castle to millions of desktop PCs.

Scotland on Screen is an exciting educational resource that puts hundreds of important historical film texts online, providing a rear-view mirror on our society over the past century.

Scotland on Screen Postcard

It’s a web-based resource developed by National Library of Scotland, Creative Scotland, Learning and Teaching Scotland and Scran.

Scotland on Screen has now been up and running for over a year and has proved to be very popular among teachers and practitioners across Scotland. During 2010, the resource was further developed with the inclusion of a considerably enhanced collection of archive material that can be used across the curriculum.

The website provides short film material and resources for Glow users to use as part of their teaching in the classroom. The public can browse and view the collection of clips on the website but Glow users can log into the site via Glow to also download film clips of interest for reuse in the classroom.

Sitting underneath the main Moving Image National Glow Group, Glow users can access the Scotland on Screen Glow Group - a place to share knowledge, information and content surrounding the resource. Users can also catch up on the latest news and information as well as discuss topics of relevance and interest through the Scotland on Screen Glow Forum. So far, we’ve found that the resource has been of interest and benefit to teachers using it across a variety of subjects and curricular areas including social studies, literacy and health and wellbeing. Scotland on Screen has also been of value to Moving Image Education practitioners.

Moving Image Education (MIE) is fast becoming an integral part of 21st century literacy and modern teaching practice. Using moving image texts as a source in addition to the written word has been proved to vastly increase wider literacy skills, confidence, engagement and fun in the classroom.

Moving Image Education - The 3 Cs

Learning and Teaching Scotland is working in partnership with Creative Scotland to make moving image education more accessible and active within Glow

We now have a Moving Image Education National Glow Group which is steadily being populated with information, resources and CPD opportunities. Work is also underway to engage with Glow users across Scotland and encourage them to participate in interesting and relevant topics of discussion through the group’s Glow Forum. There are some Glow Meets planned too.

We look forward to seeing you on Glow.

MIICE is Glowing on Thursday

Glowing Thursday this Thursday (28 October) is dedicated to MIICE. MIICE stands for Measurement of the Impact of ICT on Children’s Education. It has been developed by a partnership of Scottish education authorities and universities, led by SITC in Moray House School of Education, over 10 years, to address how we articulate what “better learning” is like when ICT is appropriately used as part of the blend of learning and teaching approaches. Members of the MIICE partnership will say a little about the MIICE quality framework, and a lot about examples of where the MIICE toolbox has been a good, quick way for busy teachers to both plan and review the success of projects, large and small, when ICT is involved.

This will be a chance to exchange experiences and reactions with colleagues who have used or tried to use the MIICE toolbox as a basis for planning and/or review of learning and teaching activities where ICT forms part of the blend.

Join us on Thursday 28th October at 4pm in the Glowing Thursdays Group.

Glen Affric

Gleann Afaraig is a glen south-west of the village of Cannich in the Highland region of Scotland, some 15 miles (24 km) to the west of Loch Ness. The River Affric runs along its length, passing through Loch Affric and Loch Benevean.

It used to be part of the lands of the clan Chisholm.

The area is a Caledonian Forest Reserve, a National Scenic Area and a National Nature Reserve. Often described as the most beautiful glen in Scotland, it contains one of the largest ancient Caledonian pinewoods in Scotland as well as lochs, moorland and mountains.

Affric Lodge, a mansion built as a hunting lodge, is located on a peninsula in Loch Affric, while a Scottish Youth Hostels Association hostel is further up the glen at Alltbeithe.

The glen is part of the Affric/Beauly hydroelectric scheme, constructed by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. Loch Mullardoch, in the neighbouring Glen Cannich, is dammed, and a 5km tunnel carries water to Loch Benevean, which has also been dammed. From there, another tunnel takes water to Fasnakyle power station, near Cannich.
