Whew!!!

It’s been non stop for Grammar staff in our first visit to a Turkish school in the capital city, Ankara. Kirsty Munro (PE) and I (Michael Conlon, Depute) are here to complete a plan with our partner school, Mehmet Emin Yurdakul Primary School, which will help to increase participation in sport, develop young leaders, build an appreciation of what sport can do for us in every aspect of our lives and taking the opportunity to take part.

Today has been our first visit to the school after our travelling days - 3 flights! - and yesterday meeting up and visiting places of culture in Ankara. It’s going to be a busy week!!Perth Grammar school programme

I decided to wear my kilt to the school and all day I have felt like a movie star - the pupils have been fantastically engaging and interested, desperate to say hi and take pictures. Many of the younger pupils performed tradition dances and tales and we visited lots of classes where we saw nothing but smiles and laughter (must be the knees). It was a great opportunity for some of the pupils to practice their English and laugh at our efforts to say hello and goodbye!

Our first big impressions are how valuable being here is, in our understanding of the culture and the possibilities for our partner project. It really has made us appreciate what we have in Scotland and the investment in sport that exists there. A big eye opener is seeing what limited facilities they have for developing Physical Education, only an outdoor play area, but also how keen their desire to change this and push the understanding that a healthy active lifestyle will contribute greatly to the chances young pupil have in academic success and overall wll-being.We have had a fantastic day and hope to be able to support Mehmet Emin in developing their Active Schools as we develop our.

We made good friends today.

London 2012 - Schedule released… Are you ready?

There is something about seeing the schedule for the London 2012 Olympic Games that brings it home that the games are really going to happen. Soon the tickets will be on sale too!

And only two years after that, Scotland will be hosting the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

So how can we make the most of this unique opportunity to leave a lasting legacy in education? Are you aware of all the opportunities, resources, ideas and initiatives out there? In other words, are you getting set?

Here is a list of just some of what is on offer - and there really is something for everyone!

1. Get Set - the London 2012 education programme: register with Get Set and get access to a huge range of excellent resources, opportunities and activities. Join the Get Set Network, the official reward and recognition scheme to get access to even more. There is something for all age groups from 3-18 across all curriculum areas. Each month you will receive a newsletter highlighting featured resources and opportunities such as Get Enterprising, the Get Ahead school leavers programme, Film Nation: Shorts and Two birds with one stone - a competition where you nominate one of your students who is living the Olympic and Paralympic values and receive a surprise visit from one of the 2012 mascots. Just released is Get Set to exercise your taste buds a competition to encourage healthy lifestyles. The prize is to have your meal ideas served up in the Athletes’ Village!

2. Inspire - Inspire projects are a way for non-commercial organisations to get involved in building the legacy of London 2012. Many schools are already involved in Inspire projects and can use this involvement to get onto the Get Set Network.

3. Learning for Life - Inspire/Aspire - many schools have participated for several years in the Learning for Life values poster competition. This year, the competition is an Inspire project and uses the Olympic and Paralympic values as the theme.

4. Human Race - this is an exciting 3 year project and another Inspire project exploring Scotland’s global impact on the history, culture and science of sport. And right now there is the opportunity to take part in a competition to design a sports related product to feature in a major new exhibition in 2012 during the London 2012 Olympic Games

5. Sky Sports - Living for Sport: this free initiative offers a mentor for the day to work with a group of young people who have been organising an event. And it is not just any old mentor in Scotland but a gold medal winning gymnast, Steve Frew.

6. Bank of Scotland National School Sports Week - have you registered your school sports event as part of this national event? Here is a chance to connect what you are doing to London 2012 and inspire learners to get involved.

Human Race - exciting competition for schools!

The Human Race - inside the science of sports medicine

The Human Race is an exciting 3 year project exploring Scotland’s global impact on the history, culture and science of sport. It will develop a series of exhibitions and newly commissioned art work that will tour throughout Scotland in 2012. This competition is your chance to be involved!

You are invited to design a sports related product to feature in a major new exhibition in 2012 during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

We are looking for a new idea or product that could be used by the athlete of the future. It can be for any sport. You could chose to design a piece of equipment, sportswear, training equipment, medical equipment for treating injuries, aids that may help disabled athletes anything at all that you can think of. We want entries that are as original and innovative as possible.

The competition is open to anyone aged 5- 17 years old.

What you win

• The winning and short-listed entries will feature as key exhibits in the Human Race touring exhibition and will tour throughout Scotland and in London during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
• £100 worth of art equipment for winning design
• £50 worth of art equipment for runners up

Edinburgh Gets Set for London 2012

The international unit at the City of Edinburgh Department of Children and Families is currently preparing to launch support for schools to enable them to use the London 2012 Olympics as an interdisciplinary context meeting many of the experiences and outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence particularly in Health & Wellbeing and Literacy Across Learning.

The 2012 Olympics provide a context for this cross curricular project aimed at P5 and P6 pupils. Culminating in a Schools’ Olympic and Paralympic Games in June 2012, a package of support and resources will be made available to schools for the whole session 2011/12. Some of these will be generic and some related to the country the specific school will be representing at the Olympics.

Schools will be encouraged to use the online resources from the London 2012 Get Set website , to register with Get Set and to join the Get Set Network - the reward and recognition scheme for Get Set, the official London 2012 education programme.

There will be a strong focus on the study and promotion of Olympic and Paralympic values (friendship, respect, courage, excellence, determination, inspiration, equality) and to make the connection between healthy minds and healthy bodies – what makes an athlete great?

The Olympics and Paralympics also offer an ideal opportunity to explore specific countries and materials will be developed on: language and literature, social subjects, art, music, dance, global footprint, food and exercise

The model of delivery will be flexible. Schools could choose between a year long programme or a month of immersion in the Olympics leading up to the Games in June 2012. The package of resources and support will be pulled together and managed by a group of staff and partners including International Unit, Arts & Learning Unit, Sports & Outdoor Education Unit, Information & Learning Resources, Eco Schools team, Equalities Officer, Health partnerships and GIRFEC.
