London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 – the Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games – put Scotland in a unique position over the next 3 years to make a lasting impact on our major national agendas: health, education, the economy, culture and the environment. London 2012 will be the biggest show on the planet with an audience of over 3 billion. It will be closely followed by Glasgow 2014 when Scotland will welcome teams from the 54 countries and 71 teams of the Commonwealth to participate in our Games. The coming together of athletes, performers and officials from across the globe in the pursuit of excellence offers educators an ideal opportunity to capture the spirit of the Games, encourage the values that underpin them and inspire young people in schools and communities across Scotland to be the best they can be and to become active, healthy, creative and enterprising global citizens.

MoreAt Bucksburn Academy in Aberdeen we were recently surprised to find out that our partnership school - Senoane in Soweto - had a wonderful opportunity to meet Prince Charles and Camilla during their royal visit to South Africa. Bucksburn is one of 7 secondary schools in Scotland partnered with a South African school as part of the British Council and London 2012- sponsored link programme International Inspirations. Through this programme, PE staff at Bucksburn and the other Scottish schools are working with their South African partners to improve health and well being in the curriculum - particularly physical activity and sport.

MoreCongratulations to Amy Shaw from Campbeltown Grammar in Argyll and Bute! Amy’s designs for the Scottish version of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville, go on sale in stores from today as official 2012 pin badges
Students from across the UK who took part in the London 2012 design competition ‘Get Set to make your mascot’ have seen their winning designs become official London 2012 pin badges with a regional twist.
‘Get Set to make your mascot’ was an initiative run through the London 2012 Education Programme ‘Get Set’ and invited children and young people in schools and colleges to design a version of the Olympic mascot Wenlock and/or the Paralympic mascot Mandeville that they thought represented the place in which they live or go to school – their community or region.
There were more than 2,500 entries into the competition - including 100′s from Scotland and over 60 (!!) from Campbeltown Grammar. Designs from each nation and region were shortlisted and students were invited to attend the national final in London. At the final the budding designers had to showcase their presentation skills as they pitched their design to a judging panel which included Jonathan Edwards, Paralympic wheelchair basketball player Ade Adepitan and London 2012 Head of Education, Nick Fuller.
After a winner from each of the nations and regions was announced they were given the opportunity to travel to London where they spent the day with a top London design agency, developing their designs into a 3D animated mascot graphic. The designs have also been made into official versions of Wenlock and Mandeville.
Well done to Amy and Campbeltown Grammar!
Pin badges can be bought in London 2012 shops, John Lewis stores and online at www.johnlewis.comGet Set is the official London 2012 education programme for schools and colleges across the UK.
