A Games Legacy for Scotland - Building the Legacy for Learning

Date: 31^st January 2012

Places are filling rapidly for the Education Scotland national event to share and develop your knowledge, experience and ideas in developing a legacy for learning from the Games.

London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 – the Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games – put Scotland in a unique position over the next 3 years to make a lasting impact on our major national agendas: health, education, the economy, culture and the environment. London 2012 will be the biggest show on the planet with an audience of over 3 billion. It will be closely followed by Glasgow 2014 when Scotland will welcome teams from the 54 countries and 71 teams of the Commonwealth to participate in our Games. The coming together of athletes, performers and officials from across the globe in the pursuit of excellence offers educators an ideal opportunity to capture the spirit of the Games, encourage the values that underpin them and inspire young people in schools and communities across Scotland to be the best they can be and to become active, healthy, creative and enterprising global citizens.

This Games Legacy for Learning event will provide an opportunity to exchange ideas about how the Games can be used as a rich context for learning to encourage sustainable international partnerships and to support the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence. As well as showcasing some of the ways in which schools, local authorities and partners have already engaged with the Games, the event will enable practitioners to access a wide range of resources and opportunities and to network with fellow professionals and partners to support their own practice.

Education Scotland is committed to supporting the aims of the Scottish Government’s Games Legacy for Scotland plan and to working in partnership with the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee and the London 2012 ‘Get Set’ team, to enable a legacy for learning. London 2012, as well as being an exciting opportunity in its own right, provides Scotland with an ideal springboard for Glasgow 2014.

Mini Olympics Festivals at Bucksburn Academy, Scotland and Senoane Secondary School South Africa

The blossoming partnership between Bucksburn Academy in Aberdeen and Senoane Secondary School in Soweto, South Africa has continued to develop. Both schools have started their Mini Olympic programme, following the positive relationships built up over the past year and a half.

At Senoane Secondary School, Soweto, South Africa their facilities have now been fully upgraded to include Basketball and Netball courts and Football pitches. Students and teachers enjoyed competing in various activities in the hot summer sun.

Meanwhile at Bucksburn Academy, S1 to S3 pupils have started competing in their own mini Olympics. Both the Football and Basketball competitions proved very exciting. So far “Scotia” house is leading the way, representing our own partnership country - South Africa

Get Set - still time to get networked!

Well done to all the schools and colleges who managed to get their Get Set network applications before the deadline for ticketshare on Friday 16th December2011. 39% of Scottish schools and colleges applied - that’s 1070 schools who will get an allocation of free tickets for the Olympics.

However, ticketshare was only one of the many benefits of joining the Get Set Network and there is still time to take part!

Get Set offers a huge range of resources across the curriculum to support literacy, numeracy, health and well being, global citizenship, enterprise and creativity. Joining the network earns each school a certificate and wall plaque, the use of the London 2012 education logo on letterheads and as well as ideas, resources, rewards and opportunities.

For instance there is Get Set goes global - find resources here about the Olympic Truce, supporting another Olympic and Paralympic team, welcoming the world to the UK through dance, drama, music and art, and celebrating World Sport Day on 25th June 2012.

Education Scotland is inviting applications from secondary teaching staff for a group study visit to The Hague to explore innovative work in dance and education. This visit has been arranged in partnership with Creative Scotland, which will support the additional active participation of Dance artists from across Scotland. This professional development will support ‘Get Scotland Dancing’, increasing the capacity of teachers to teach dance, and contributing to the Games Legacy for Scotland.

The deadline for submission of an application has been extended to 13th Jan 2012 .

The Netherlands school education system has high-quality Dance education, and the visit will take place during the “Festival of Dance” which provides an opportunity to engage in practical workshops with international contemporary choreographers and view their subsequent professional performances. http://en.holland-dance.com/page/festival

It is expected that the visit to The Hague will include

- Workshop sessions with professional choreographers

- Visits to see professional performance linked to the workshops

- Visit to a local school that is delivering dance

Please note the workshop sessions are aimed at semi-professional level and the choreographers have been made aware that it is a mixed ability group. Should you have any concerns about this or health problems please do get in touch with [email protected] as options can be provided.

Travel to The Hague will be on Thursday 16th February, with four full working days in the city, followed by return to Scotland on Monday 20th February.

SCIPD funding will cover return flights to The Hague, airport to hotel transfers, and overnight hotel accommodation in the city centre on a bed and breakfast basis.

Participants will be offered a pre-visit preparatory meeting, and a post-visit meeting to support follow-up activity and encourage wider impact.

This study visit is likely to be of most relevance to education professionals in Scottish secondary schools with a leading role in Dance education.

Expected learning outcomes

Participants will have an opportunity to:

• investigate the place of Dance education in the curriculum and Dutch practice for support of teaching of Dance
• broaden their knowledge of the effectiveness of choreographer -led pedagogical approaches to teaching Dance
• share professional dialogue and insight with their hosts, with teacher colleagues in the group, and network with Scottish Dance artists.

Upon returning from the study visit, participants will be expected to:

• produce reports for Education Scotland which demonstrate the impact on their professional practice of the study visit experience
• disseminate findings, share ideas and new approaches within their own establishment and beyond
• make changes to learning and teaching practices in their own professional context.

Applicants may wish to use the experience of the study visit towards professional recognition by GTCS or simply to enhance their professional understanding and practice.

If you want to inspire your young people and get them engaged with the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games then YDance is here to help. We offer CPD Training and Workshop Programmes that work for early years and all primary levels, from 1 to 7.

YDance CPD Training Day (Let’s Get Olympic!) – Tuesday 24 January 2012

We’re running an Olympic themed CPD day to give you the knowledge and skills to use dance to inspire your pupils and explore some of the themes of this landmark event. During the day you will learn how to use movement games, creative tasks and taught sequences to enable your pupils to create dances inspired by four areas of the Olympics and meet the dance outcomes for the Curriculum for Excellence:

• The Olympic Motto & Culture
• The Olympic Rings
• The Olympics & Sport
• The Olympic Torch

This day will give you everything you need to take straight back to school and get your pupils moving!

Cost: £50 per hour for a tutor to work with one class (approx £1.60 per pupil)

YDance (Scottish Youth Dance) is the National Dance Agency for children and young people in Scotland. Excitement for Bucksburn Academy’s South African partner school!

At Bucksburn Academy in Aberdeen we were recently surprised to find out that our partnership school - Senoane in Soweto - had a wonderful opportunity to meet Prince Charles and Camilla during their royal visit to South Africa. Our partner school was selected for its work with promoting school PE. Great picture of our Principal and some of the students.

Bucksburn is one of 7 secondary schools in Scotland partnered with a South African school as part of the British Council and London 2012- sponsored link programme International Inspirations. Through this programme, PE staff at Bucksburn and the other Scottish schools are working with their South African partners to improve health and well being in the curriculum - particularly physical activity and sport.

Bucksburn’s partnership has begun to flourish and reap benefits for both schools from the rich intercultural exchange and dialogue. Look out for more!

The London 2012 Ticketshare scheme offers FREE, yes FREE, tickets to schools and colleges. To access this offer you must join the Get Set Network, the reward and recognition scheme of the London 2012 educational programme. Over 650 Scottish schools have joined the scheme and all those who want to take up the offer will get an allocation of free tickets. Interested? Then get your application done before Friday 16th December!!

Lasswade High School Goes Global!

Lasswade High School in Midlothian goes global and shows support for Olympic and Paralympic teams across the world…

Lasswade High School in Midlothian is taking part in a London 2012 initiative to support at least one Olympic team and at least one Paralympic team from around the world to help their students prepare for the arrival of athletes and visitors from around the world to their towns/cities/communities for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games next summer.

A new initiative called ‘Support a Team’ is a major new strand of Get Set goes global’, part of the official London 2012 education programme which aims to help students explore and demonstrate how sport brings the world together.

Schools will be encouraged to learn about the athletes and cultures of their chosen teams, along with Team GB and ParalympicsGB, in the lead-up to the London 2012 Games.

All schools can access free learning resources at www.london2012.com/getsetgoesglobal to help them to select their teams. Resources designed to help young people get behind the athletes competing for Team GB and ParalympicsGB will be available via the ‘Get Set’ website in the new year.

Lasswade High has chosen to support the Chinese gymnastics team because the school has full high quality gymnastics facility which is home to Lasswade Gymnastics club. They have also chosen to support the South African Paralympic team because of their link with a South African township school.

There will be up to 204 Olympic teams and 170 Paralympic teams competing at London 2012 and there are many ways a school can select a team. Schools could choose a team their school or community already has a link with or that speaks a language spoken in their school. They may choose a team training near them at a Pre Games Training Camp or by using the ‘team selector tool’ on the interactive map, available on the ‘Get Set goes global’ website www.london2012.com/getsetgoesglobal

Promoting international links and encouraging intercultural dialogue are also key themes of the Scottish Government’s Games Legacy for Scotland plan. With Glasgow 2014 just around the corner following next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, there is a real opportunity for Scottish schools and communities to connect with the Commonwealth and really forge some longlasting links.

So… if you are participating in the Get Set ‘Support Another Team’ initiative for London 2012, why not consider selecting a Commonwealth country? The majority of Commonwealth countries are in the developing world and thus provide a rich and relevant learning context for young people to explore global citizenship, health and well being, creativity and enterprise.

Torch relay route announced

On Monday 7th Nov 2011, London 2012 unveiled more than 1,000 communities across the UK that will have their moment to shine on the route of the 70-day Olympic Torch Relay.

Get Set has created some amazing new resources to help you learn about the Torch Relay.

Top facts about the Olympic Torch Relay:

• More than 95% of the population will be within 10 miles of the Olympic Flame.
• The Olympic Flame will visit more than 1,000 communities. Check out this brilliant interactive map to find your nearest community on the route.
• The Olympic Torch Relay will travel by different methods of transport including horseback, bicycle, tram and steam train!
• The Olympic Flame will arrive in the UK on 18 May 2012 and the Olympic Torch Relay will begin at Land’s End on 19 May 2012 and complete its journey at the Olympic Stadium on 27 July 2012.
