I am pleased to announce that a decision has been made for the designs of our football strips! From nearly 2000 entries from over 70 schools across the length and breadth of Scotland, a shortlist of 30 entries was made and on Tuesday 7th February the winners were announced.
The winners are Kerr Carlyle (Dalmilling Primary School in Ayr), Anah Dodds (Letham Primary School), Mia Gordon (Edinburgh Academy) and Amelia Purkis (Lilliesleaf Primary School). A special commendation was also given to Ben Logan (Maxwellton Primary School, East Kilbride) who’s design we plan to make into the goalkeepers shirts.
The winners were chosen by a panel including Craig Coulthard (Forest Pitch artist), Robert Craig OBE (Scottish Football Museum), Leonie Bell (Creative Scotland), Jon Duckworth (LOCOG) Stuart Cosgrove (Journalist & Broadcaster) and Emily Quinn (Designer).
The winning designs were announced by Shona Robison MSP (Minister for Commonwealth Games & Sport) at Hampden Stadium, where the Minister also opened an exhibition of the shortlisted designs. All the shortlisted children were presented with a certificate, and the winners received Scotland shirts signed by national team manager Craig Levein. The exhibition will be open until 15th July and entry is free.
There is a short video about the exhibition on the BBC website which can be seen by following this link.
I was delighted and inspired by the variety and imagination shown by pupils (and teachers!) and the response exceeded expectations. I would like to thank them all for their efforts and creativity.
We will keep you updated with progress on the production of the strips, in the meantime you can see the winning designs and the entire shortlist on our website.
with thanks

MoreLooking for a way to develop youth leadership and volunteering? Well the Lead 2014 campaign does just that and during the months of February and March at one of seven day-long conferences held around the country by partner universities, pupils will be given the chance to see just how their involvement in the Commonwealth games can benefit others.
The University of Stirling today launched the programme aimed at inspiring Scottish school pupils to take up the challenge of leadership through a supported mentoring partnership with university student volunteers. The object of the project? For pupils to plan, organise and manage a Commonwealth Games themed sports festival in their area for local primary schools.
Lead 2014 brings together sportscotland, Youth Sport Trust and Glasgow 2014 alongside 137 Scottish secondary schools, the aim being to inspire and motivate thousands of young people through the context of sport to become the leaders and volunteers of the future. Running alongside the campaign will be an information workshop aimed at building capacity for secondary school PE teachers and associated Active Schools Coordinators. This will enable them to develop the projects taking place within their area and support the pupil leaders who are taking on this exciting challenge in the build-up to the Commonwealth Games.
MoreThis was the question faced by pupils in over 100 primary schools across Scotland. More than 2000 entries were submitted from which the judging panel had the difficult task of selecting a short-list of 30 designs. Football pundit Stuart Cosgrove, Jon Duckworth of LOCOG, Creative Programmer for London 2012 Leonie Bell, textile designer Emily Quinn, Michael Farrell from Education Scotland and the artist himself, Craig Coulthard had the unenviable task of picking four winners from the myriad of creative and inventive designs submitted by Scottish school pupils.
Shona Robison MSP, Minister for Sport and the Commonwealth Games unveiled the exhibition held within the Hall of Fame at the Scottish Football Museum in Hampden Park on Tuesday the 7th of February. There the winners, Amelia Purkis, Kerr Carlyle, Anah Dodds and Mia Gordon, were announced to an expectant audience of pupils and teachers from across Scotland, with Ben Logan receiving a special commendation. It was agreed by all in attendance that the level of competition was extremely high and all entries had shown real thought and consideration of the key themes surrounding the challenge.
The competition itself encouraged learners to think about issues such as their national identity, environmental impact and sustainability, mythology, diversity and the power of sport. Through these concepts the pupils were asked to create a football strip to be worn by players at the Forest Pitch match on the 21st July 2012, taking place in a hidden pitch set within a Sitka Spruce plantation just outside Selkirk.
The exhibition itself is well worth a visit and will run from the 7th February until 15th July 2012 with opening times as follows: Mon – Sat 10am – 5pm; Sun 11am – 5pm. This is a great opportunity to come along and celebrate in the success of these Scottish pupils and to learn more about the project itself.
