Calling all young people aged 16-18…

The London 2012 Young Games Maker volunteer programme

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) is inviting teams of dedicated and passionate 16 to 18 year olds to begin applying for Young Games Maker roles through the generalist recruitment process.

The search is on for over 2,000 young people from across the UK to take up volunteer roles vital to ensuring the successful delivery of the Games. This is the first time ever that 16-18 year olds have been allowed to volunteer at an Olympic Games.

Approximately 250 teams of young people, who must be aged 16 or over on 1 July 2012 and under 18 on 1 January 2012 will join the adult Games Makers next summer to help stage the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Applications are open for roles such as Field of Play Assistants in the Olympic and Paralympic Athletics competition where duties include carrying athletes’ kit to and from the field of play and Technology Print Distribution Team Members who will ensure athlete competition results are circulated to those that need them.

Applications can be made now on the London 2012 website. Team leaders from organisations such as youth or sports clubs, community and volunteering groups are invited to apply until midnight on 31 October 2011 by submitting an application for their team at www.london2012.com/young-games-maker. Schools and colleges can also apply but only if they are members of the Get Set Network, the London 2012 educational reward and recognition scheme.

Get Set - troubleshooting…

Have you tried to register with Get Set and not received a log-in? Or has your log-in not worked? Have you completed a Get Set Network application and heard nothing back? Have you heard that you have been accepted to the Network but not received your plaque or certificate?

In most cases there is a simple explanation for all of these issues. However, if you have tried everything and are still really stuck, here is a message from the Get Set team:

“For all issues and queries relating to registration, log in details, log ins not working, etc, please contact the help line on 01634 729877 (office hours) or [email protected]. You don’t need to suffer in silence and someone will help you!”

East Ayrshire gets into the spirit!

The latest authority to get all its young people involved in preparing for London 2012 is East Ayrshire…

Children across East Ayrshire are getting into the Olympic spirit in the run-up to the 2012 London Games.

In an Active Schools project, each East Ayrshire primary school has been allocated its own Olympic country, which it will then represent in a series of competitions, climaxing in a full-day Olympic fun festival during National School Sports Week in June.

Taking part in these events and activities will make it easy for all East Ayrshire schools to become members of the Get Set Network, giving them access to all the rewards and recognition offered as well as high quality resources and materials to support them.

Get Scotland Dancing with the Big Dance School Pledge

Big Dance School pledge - be part of a world record attempt!

The Big Dance School Pledge is a mass participation dance event for schools across the UK and around the world. It will take place at 1pm on 18 May 2012 - the day that the Olympic torch arrives in the UK. Big Dance is about showing lots of different types of Dance in unusual places and this year will be a world record attempt.

The choreographer for Big Dance 2012 is renowned choreographer Wayne McGregor and he will create a piece of dance which will be available on the website and supported by resources.

Wayne McGregor is the multi award-winning British choreographer, renowned for his physically testing choreography and ground-breaking collaborations across dance, film, music, visual art, technology and science.

The choreography for the schools pledge will be available online from January 2012 at: Big Dance 2012 - Official Site - Big Dance 2012 but you can register there from NOW for news - and you don’t have to wait for this to get started dancing! Why not create your own dance to welcome the Olympic Torch to your local community? Or create a dance for the opening or closing ceremony of your own Olympic or Paralympic event?

The Big Dance Schools Pledge has been awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark. This means that you can use involvement in Big Dance to join the Get Set network - the London 2012 reward and recognition scheme for schools and colleges. You will be recognised by London 2012 with a plaque and certificate, and granted the right to use the London 2012 education logo on yourwebsite, school/college sign and letterhead.You can also access exclusive rewards such as tours of the Olympic Park, visits from athletes and receive priority access to tickets to the Games through the London 2012 Ticketshare initiative! All you have to do, is complete the simple application to join the London 2012 Get Set network.

Get Set Goes Global

21st September sees the official launch of a new suite of exciting resources from the Get Set team - Get Set Goes Global. These resources offer a wide range of ideas and materials for exploring global citizenship and creativity in the context of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. There is a strong focus on using the idea of the Olympic Truce to promote learning about the power of sport to resolve conflict and foster peace, respect and cultural understanding. In addition there is a bank of information about each of the competing teams, an encouragement to support a 2nd Olympic and Paralympic team, creative ideas for welcoming the world to our communities through film, photography, art and performance and a range of partner programmes too!

To access the full range of resources register for Get Set and sign up to the Get Set Network. 45% of Scottish schools are now registered and 233 have taken the additional step of becoming network members. Remember that joining before 16th December entitles schools and colleges to an allocation of free tickets through the ticketshare scheme

Get Set - more new resources!

As of 12th September 2011, 1220 schools and colleges across Scotland have registered with Get Set and over 200 have taken the extra step of joining the Get Set Network reward and recognition scheme. Every school on the network will be offered the chance of tickets to the Olympics through the Ticketshare scheme. Sign up to the Get Set Network now!

Primary Activity Pack

Get Set are now offering a new activity pack for primary schools who join up to the scheme. This includes a London 2012-themed game, posters, fact sheets and activity ideas. All schools that have already registered for Get Set have received information about this in the September newsletter. Sign up now to get involved!

Get Set Goes Global

This month also sees the launch of new Get Set Goes Global resources on the Get Set website to support schools in connecting learning to London 2012. Get Set Goes Global offers a range of materiasls including resources on the theme of Olympic Truce, supporting exploration and debate about how sport can play a role in promoting peace, respect and cultural understanding. There are also resources on the nations of the Olympic and Paralympic games including a country wall chart and suggested creative activities for welcoming the world to the UK.
