As the end of another school session approaches, 40% of Scottish schools and colleges have now signed up for Get Set, the London 2012 educational programme. Get Set provides a wide range of excellent interdisciplinary resources and activities, focusing on the Olympic and Paralympic values. Taking part in Get Set will be a great way to prepare for Scotland’s own major sporting event - the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. By using the inspiration of these events we can leave a lasting legacy for learning in schools and communities across Scotland, building international partnerships and using this rich interdisciplinary context to support Curriculum for Excellence.

Establishments which go the extra mile and join the Get Set Network, are able to access even more opportunities, benefits and rewards including free tickets for London 2012 through the ticketshare scheme, athlete and mascot visits, the use of the 2012 educational logo and a wall plaque - and maybe even a visit from the Olympic Torch as it makes its way around the UK on the way to London.

At the last count, over 200 schools had responded to the one-minute Learning and Teaching Scotland survey to gather information from schools and organisations about their Games Legacy activities. It will also be used to populate the Games Legacy for Scotland Interactive Map, helping practitioners to share practice and collaborate on the different initiatives and activities they are involved in.

Olympic Mascot Wenlock visits Canmore Primary pupil

The London 2012 Olympic mascot Wenlock made an appearance at Canmore Primary school, Dunfermline, on Friday 17 June, to ’shine a spotlight’ on pupil Sean Clark who is living the Olympic value of RESPECT.

As a member of the Get Set network, the official London 2012 education programme, Canmore Primary had the chance to take part in ‘Get Set to shine a spotlight’ by nominating a student who has truly been inspired by the Games and is living the Olympic values. The student who most impressed the London 2012 Education Team in all of Scotland was Sean and so he is being rewarded with a surprise visit from Wenlock, the London 2012 Olympic mascot as part of the mascots journey around the UK, meeting new people, making new friends and trying new sports.

Maureen Shearer explains why Canmore Primary School nominated Sean Clark:

‘Sean is a boy who finds academia really hard but sport is his life. He comes to life when involved in any sporting activities. He suffers from Sever’s disease which causes him a great deal of pain in his feet but he never complains and will never opt out of sport.

‘Sean enjoys researching people involved in all areas of sport and is using the knowledge to feed back to the other pupils. This is proving to be really beneficial for his self esteem. He is using the value of respect in all our sporting activities and is being very supportive of others who are not as sporty as he is. We would love to see his face if he won something like this because he is a winner and we know it would inspire him to believe in himself.’

Get Set is the official London 2012 education programme for schools and colleges across the UK. It provides free learning resources for 3-19 year olds to find out more about the Games and explore the Olympic Values of friendship, excellence and respect and the Paralympic Values of determination, inspiration, courage and equality.

Over 16,500 schools and colleges across the UK have already registered with the ‘Get Set’ programme to find resources, ideas and opportunities to help them make the most of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Registered schools and colleges that demonstrate a commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values by using the Games to add value to the life of the school or college can apply to join the Get Set network. Being part of the Get Set network enables schools and colleges to gain access to exclusive rewards and opportunities from London 2012 including a plaque and a certificate and the right to use the London 2012 Education logo on the school or college sign, headed paper, website and newsletter.

As a member of the Get Set network schools and colleges also receive access to great opportunities like exclusive Olympic Park tours, meeting international figures such as Archbishop Desmund Tutu, visits from Olympians, Paralympians and the London 2012 mascots Wenlock and Mandeville, the chance to take part in the pilot of brand new London 2012 initiatives and be entered into prize draws to win goodies from London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games sponsors, like digital cameras.

Plus, members of the Get Set network will be at the front of the queue for an allocation of London 2012 ticketshare tickets as long as they apply before December 16th

Eaglesham Primary - P6.1 Commonwealth Sports Quilt

Everyone in the class has designed their own sporting symbol representing a sport in the Commonwealth Games. We then used felt to cut out our shapes and cleverly used buttons for different aspects of the design.

We have worked really hard and concentrated on sewing in detail (we aimed for it to look like it had been completed on a sewing machine! :) )

Now that all our patches are on the quilt it shows the variety of sports that are involved in the Commonwealth Games.

See if you can identify some of the sports below in our quilt:

Gymnastics, Rugby, Lawn Bowls, Aquatics, Cycling, Wrestling, Relay, Shooting, Hockey, Netball.

Embracing the Olympic Values in Edinburgh

Comments: 2 Comments » Tags:  : Categories International, Paralympics, health and well being, olympics

Senior primary pupils in Edinburgh are to take part in a major city-wide curriculum based project that will help them learn about Olympic and Paralympic values.

Primary schools will adopt a nation in the year running up to London 2012 and will learn about the country’s culture. Edinburgh based international students will buddy up with schools to help them learn about their country and, in 2012, schools will represent their chosen country in The Edinburgh Games.

Alongside the international link-ups and sporting emphasis, pupils will embrace music, drama and the arts to develop opening and closing ceremonies for The Edinburgh Games.

Schools will have a menu of activities to choose from with some running activities all year and some during a shorter period leading up to the Games in June 2012.

Activities and projects will include:

  • Study and promotion of Olympic and Paralympic values
  • Healthy minds, healthy bodies – what makes an athlete great?
  • Comparative studies of Scotland and a school’s adopted country
  • Study of adopted country with support from international students on areas such as language, geography, art, music, dance, food and exercise
  • E-twinning with schools from the adopted country
  • Study of sports disciplines and opportunities to try new activities
  • Art, music and drama input from visiting specialists and instrumental music instructors

The programme is open to all primary and special schools in Edinburgh. Schools can choose whether to offer at P5 or P6 stage

Children are very athletic and competitive. Its going to be great when they get an allocated Physical Education period. Staff are positive with the experience their learners are receiving.

Very hot day 24 degrees. We are in shorts, everyone else are in jumpers, scarves and even ear warmers, as its their winter! We come away a little burnt and dehydrated!!

Caroline spends some time with David, discussing the progress of the plan and next steps for year three.

Manage a little shopping on way back and vist Nelson Mandela square.
