Opportunities for schools and communities
Now that we know the first details of the London 2012 torch relay route, have you thought about how to celebrate the arrival of the torch in communities across Scotland? As well as major stops in Scottish towns and cities including visits to Shetland and Orkney, the torch will also travel through all our local authorities on its journey to the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium on 27th July 2012. Increase your chances of the torch visiting your school or community by getting involved in the Get Set programme. The torch will only visit schools which are members of the Get Set Network
Registrations in Scotland for the London 2012 Educational Programme, Get Set, have now reached over 1000 and applications to the Get Set Network, the educational reward and recognition scheme, continue to rise steadily. Practitioners are recognising the benefits and opportunities offered by Get Set especially to support interdisciplinary learning on the theme of Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games. Falkirk (63%) and Clackmannanshire (56%) lead the way with the highest proportion of registrations. Several authorities such as Falkirk, West Lothian, Highland and Edinburgh are developing mini-Olympic events and using the theme to support implementation of Curriculum for Excellence.

MoreLatest Media Release on Ticketshare and the Get Set Network….
London 2012 and Mayor of London rally schools to claim their Ticketshare tickets
London 2012 Chair Seb Coe and Mayor of London Boris Johnson have today sent out a rallying cry to schools in London and across the UK to ensure they do not miss out on their chance to receive tickets to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Schools must submit an application to be part of the London 2012 Get Set education network by 16 December 2011 in order to be eligible to receive their allocation of tickets. Further information on how to be part of the Get Set network and claim tickets is available at www.london2012.com/getset
Ticketshare tickets are donated through a levy placed on London 2012 hospitality packages sold by Prestige Hospitality.
Get Set is the official London 2012 education programme for schools and colleges across te UK. It aims to enhance teaching and learning by helping teachers to link learning to the London 2012 Games and the Olympic and Paralympic Values. Through the Get Set website, teachers and students can access free resources such as films and images, enter competitions connected to the Games and download fact and activity sheets.
Schools and colleges which demonstrate how they are using Olympic and Paralympic Values to enhance their curriculum can apply to join the Get Set network. Members of the network will receive Ticketshare tickets, as well as a plaque and certificate and the right to use the London 2012 education logo on their website, school sign and letterhead. They also gain access to ‘money can’t buy’ prizes such as visits from athletes or tours of the Olympic Park.
LOCOG Chair Seb Coe commented, ‘Schools and colleges across London and the UK have a golden opportunity to give some of their pupils the chance of a lifetime – tickets to see the greatest show on earth. More than 18,000 schools have taken the first step towards claiming their tickets by registering with Get Set. Now is the time for them to go one step further and apply to join the Get Set network and claim their Ticketshare tickets. I am hugely grateful both to Prestige Ticketing and to the Mayor of London who is fully supportive of the scheme to ensure tickets for London schoolchildren.’
Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson, said, ‘This is an amazing chance for schools and colleges to bring the excitement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to the classroom and really help make London 2012 something special for their pupils to be a part of. With so many unique, money-can’t-buy experiences to be gained from joining Get Set and signing up to Ticketshare, any school or college that doesn’t get involved is missing out on an incredible opportunity.’
Schools need to apply to join the London 2012 Get Set network by 16 December 2011 to be eligible. Over 3,000 schools are part of the London 2012 Get Set network currently and have already guaranteed an allocation of tickets.

MoreMay 9th saw the beginning of an exciting new national competition for all schools in Scotland. You can take part and design a new tartan for the Commonwealth Games 2014.
The submissions will incorporate as many as all six of the colours found on the Glasgow 2014 logo and the winning design will become the official tartan of the Commonwealth Games 2014.
Designing the tartan however, is only the beginning. The competition will focus not only on the design but also on global citizenship. The competition hopes to provide opportunities for wider learning on sustainability, citizenship and international education themes. The focus could come from the values of the Games –‘humanity, equality and destiny’, international school links or the culture and heritage of Commonwealth countries. Submissions will be made through engaging with innovative tartan generator software.
Schools will be encouraged to run their own competitions, and to select one final entry to represent their school before the date of 17th June. Schools will digitally upload their winning tartan online onto a special piece of software called the “tartan generator” to be considered with other schools’ entries from across Scotland. To find out how to register, use the software and to find out what will be required for submission, follow the link below.

When registering your school to take part in the tartan design 2014 competition you will be asked to supply a competition security code. The security code is td2014. This, and various other details to help with registration, can be found within the ‘administrator’ guidelines on the information site homepage.

MoreA warm welcome to new guest bloggers from Primary 6 at Eaglesham Primary School in East Renfrewshire. Eaglesham Primary is one of several schools in the Mearns Castle cluster with a link to a cluster of schools in Delhi through the British Council Connecting Classrooms programme. Teachers from these schools visited Delhi in October 2010 just after the Commonwealth Games and the handover ceremony of the Games to Scotland.
The pupils have been working on a stop-frame animation about the Delhi Games and hopefully we will be able to get this uploaded to the blog!
MoreWhen we think of the sacrifices athletes make to get to the top of their game and reach their personal best, could there be a more amazing and inspiring story of courage and determination than that of Abdinasir Ibrahim, 5000m runner from Somalia? Take a look at his story, reported on Channel 4 News on 9th May 2011.
The story of Abdinasir Ibrahim
How could you use this story to inspire young people to strive for their personal best or to explore the Olympic and Paralympic Values?

MoreWe are pupils in Primary 6.1 from Eaglesham Primary School.
We at P.6.1 have completed a stop frame animation about the Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 XIX Commonwealth Games.
Our stop frame animation includes the opening ceremony, swimming, relay race and the handover ceremony to Glasgow.
We are failing to upload our animation to this blog but we’ll keep trying to upload it!
We enjoyed lots of different activities like making our plasticine models for the animation. The techinal side was lots of fun and creating the backgrounds was hard work! Before we made our animation, we created a mini animation on Glow. We researched information from PIXARs book {To Infinity And Beyond!}.
We are doing lots of activities related to the Commonwealth Games and we will keep you updated!
The hunt is on for teams of young people to represent Scotland in a competition linked to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
Young people across Scotland are getting the chance to make films that answer two questions:
If you could change one thing in your neighborhood, what would it be?
And what could you do to change it?
It’s part of a competition called Big Voice from BT, and it’s one of the education programmes linked to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. To enter, teams of young people aged 10-19 need to submit their film proposal by May 27th. If you would like to enter but feel you cannot meet this deadline, please contact [email protected] to discuss.
Three teams from Scotland, chosen by judges, will get £1000 and support from a team of film students from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama to produce their film next Autumn. They will also qualify for up to £5,000 and support from Unltd., a charity which supports social entrepreneurs, to turn their ideas into a community project.
The resulting films will be screened on giant London 2012 Live Site screens all over the UK during Spring 2012, with the Scottish winner being announced at a Live Site event in Glasgow. The final stage of the competition is an Oscars-style ceremony to announce the UK winners just before the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games begin.
The project supports several aspects of Curriculum for Excellence including interdisciplinary learning, personal achievement and subject areas like the expressive arts and social studies. It is a great opportunity to explore global citizenship issues in your community and to connect classroom learning to real life.
There’s still time for schools or youth groups to enter: the deadline for the first stage of the competition is 27 May 2011. If you would like to enter but are unable to meet this deadline or if you wish to discuss your proposal with one of the LTS Global Citizenship team, please contact [email protected].
