What’s an ambassador, then?

…WELL MIGHT YOU ASK!

In the past few weeks, I have found myself having to develop, in a hurry, some of the skills of a real ambassador. My eleven fellow Interaction Ambassadors report similar experiences of having to field Press, school and other inquiries about our plans while we were all sworn to secrecy.

However, despite our ages, we seem, somehow, to have managed to stay circumspect, diplomatic and upbeat. Above all, we have managed to avoid fanning the flames of speculation over our great Delhi adventure.

Now that some of the feverish (sorry!) wondering has abated, we will be able to post updates a bit more regularly here. I would suggest you also check out this site for more background on the Interaction Ambassadors and our journey so far.

“No comment. No comment. Move along now…”

Well, it was touch and go for a while. After several days of uncertainty about the Games, Team Scotland has arrived in Delhi. There are some continuing concerns about accommodation but at least the 19th Commonwealth Games will go ahead on 3rd October. You can follow all the news on the BBC Commonwealth Games pages.

So what do you think? The events of recent days raise some interesting questions about relationships between countries, about the impact of major sporting events and about how an emerging nation like India copes with the perceptions and expectations of the developed countries when it still has massive problems with poverty, inequality and concerns about corruption. Why were the facilities for the Games not completely ready? Who is responsible for this situation? What does it tell us about India? What does it tell us about our own attitudes and expectations? Should there be more international support when countries like India host major events? Were teams, including Scotland, right to complain about the facilities? As the ‘handover nation’, how should Scotland be reacting?

The Delhi Handover ceremony will be a spectacular event but it will not be the only celebration as Scotland takes on the mantle of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. All over Scotland, in every local authority, there will be Games for Scotland events encouraging people of all ages to celebrate the handover by getting active and taking part in sport and physical activity. Many of these events will be dance-basedGames Legacy Logo. Do you know what is happening in your local area? Take a look at the Games for Scotland page to find out.

delhi 2010 imageHello!

My name is Maria Ure and I am part of the Mass Cast performing in the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in India. Over the coming weeks I will be informing you all about the exciting journey that many Scottish ambassadors are about to embark on to perform in the Delhi 201o Flag Handover Ceremony.

Firstly, let me tell you a little about me and my journey so far…
I am 18 years old and currently studying at Glasgow University. However my journey started many months, if not years before now. I have been a dancer since I was 3 years old as well as playing piano, partaking in drama and singing groups, netball teams, swimming and my more recent role of being Head Girl of Perth Grammar School. It was in fact through the school that I first got involved with this project. I was nominated by them to attend the interview in front of a selection panel to partake in the games. Thankfully I got through along with 3 other girls from Perth and Kinross. However, later on more girls joined the group and we now have a team of 7 representing our area. In the beginning, fundraising was the key topic of all our meetings, which were held on a fortnightly basis. And then the time for orientation took place…we all came to Glasgow and took part in a massive couple of days with lots of people and many tasks to complete. To add to the tension we were made aware that possibly not all of us would get through to bootcamp. During these two days we saw doctors, the costume department, performed and met the team who will construct the image for the closing ceremony. A part of this was also signing an official document for confidentiality. SO, although I aim to give you a sneak peek into the event and update you there are some things which will have to remain a secret…

After a great time at bootcamp and meeting loads of new people the excitement started to kick in - especially when I got the email saying I was going to take part! I was going to Delhi!!!!!

All the performers are from all over Scotland, so there is at least one in your area too…

On Monday the 20th September I started bootcamp and I will continue to give you a little insight in to the excitement that surrounds our journey…but, even I don’t know what’s happening yet? It’s all very top secret so shhh…it’s between us, okay?

Get Ready for Delhi!

new-delhi-logoOne of the first milestones in our journey to create a Games Legacy for Scotland is the Delhi Handover on October 14th 2010 when the responsibility of hosting the Commonwealth Games is handed over from India to Scotland. Athletes, officials, delegates, young ambassadors and the mass cast of performers will all have their part to play in the success of the event. This will be a time to celebrate our connection with India, to celebrate Scotland and our rich culture and heritage. It will be an opportunity to make new friends and connections and to begin that lasting legacy of the Games.

To mark this occasion, our first bloggers will be a range of people who are going to be in Delhi. You will be able to follow their progress and get the inside stories of what it is like to take part in this major global event.

Our first blogger is Chiara Ruddy, a 6th Year pupil from St Aloysius College and one of Glasgow’s 12 Interaction Ambassadors. We hope you enjoy hearing about how they get on.

You can find out more about the Delhi Games at the official Delhi 2010 website.

Games Legacy LogoThe next few years will be an exciting time for Scotland with the hosting of several major sporting events – London 2012, Glasgow 2014, the Ryder Cup in 2014 and the International Children’s Games in 2011. These events provide a huge opportunity for us to create a lasting legacy in health and well being, in the economy, in education and culture and in promoting a sustainable future. Learning and Teaching Scotland is working with a range of partners to promote the educational legacy of the Games. We want to:

  • foster friendships and connections with other countries, particularly across the Commonwealth, to promote greater cultural understanding.
  • use the context of the Games to support implementation of Curriculum for Excellence across all curriculum areas

We will use this blog to keep you informed of activities, events and opportunities related to the Games. We will be joined by a number of bloggers from a range of backgrounds including the Glasgow Interaction Ambassadors. More about this in the next blog.

We hope that you will join in with comments and suggestions.

Glasgow's Interaction Ambassadors
Hi, Chiara Ruddy here.
I’m a pupil at St Aloysius’ College in Glasgow, and one of Glasgow’s twelve young British Council Interaction Ambassadors. Our role will be to help shape the legacy of the Glasgow 2014 Games. In preparation for this, we will be attending October’s Commonwealth Games handover ceremony in Delhi.

I’ve been asked to blog on behalf of the team. We hope you will follow us, contact us and get on board with the effort to make Glasgow’s very own games a resounding success for all of Scotland in 2014 and beyond!
