Welcome to my blog!

My role as National Parental Involvement Coordinator at Learning and Teaching Scotland is to drive forward parental involvement in education in Scotland. To do that, I need to work in close partnership with all those who have an interest in developing and sharing practice in this area. I am keen to develop a strong evidence base of good practice from across Scotland which will demonstrate where parents and carers are effectively involved and are making a difference to children’s learning. I therefore want to hear from you and to use this blog as an opportunity to share, discuss and reflect. What has worked? What are the challenges? I will add a post which will highlight examples of promising, innovative or good practice. Please give me your examples and ideas. I look forward to hearing from you.

As Field Team Co-ordinator for Parental Involvement in the NE, I visited Ancrum Primary School in Dundee yesterday. The enthusiastic HT and her staff work very well with parents/carers, which has been recognised by HMIe. An innovative idea has been the setting up of an active learning playroom where staff take children to do practical maths activities etc. A part-time Nursery Nurse has been employed to work in the room, and the DHT is working with PSAs to enable them to take children to the room to work. Parents have also been in to see the room in action, and the HT hopes to be able to have parents in, working together with children and staff in the playroom, on a regular basis.
Parents are encouraged into the school, and there are a variety of activities which have been offered. These include making board games and then playing them with the children, and an open doors day, where parents were shown, among other things, how to access info on the computer. The school has a very enthusiastic IT teacher, and the children are credited with being the highest users of “Glow” to date in the area. Hopefully, this will, in time, involve parents too.

Hi Lorraine
I picked up your blog through Fiona Robertson and the National Home School Development Group. We have a strategy, supported by a toolkit to help schools to develop their partnership working with parents and the local community called EPPa (Effective Partnerships with Parents. It’s different in that it is parent / community led. If you are interested do please visit the website.
My other hat is that I publish booklets for parents and there is information about the booklets at www.southgatepublishers.co.uk (Working with Families section). I’d be happy to send you samples if you are interested.

Dear Lorraine - I was browsing the ‘net and came across your interesting blog. I write ‘interesting’ because I have just started up a company in the UK that may well interest you - particularly as we are keen to kick start the service by give away free subscriptions to a service that is purely aimed at involving parents in their children’s development. Please have a look and let me know if we can talk.
