Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning, Keith Brown MSP, is to launch Curriculum for Excellence through Outdoor Learning

This signals a significant strengthening of the position of outdoor learning as a key context for the delivery of Curriculum for Excellence.  The new guidance document will provide a national vision and rationale for outdoor learning and will include sections on planning, Curriculum for Excellence, implementation, and evaluation of outdoor learning.

The video foreword by the Minister, and of course the guidance document itself, will  be available at the Outdoor Learning online resource which will go live in Spring of 2010.  The guidance will also be distributed nationally in document form.

After the launch of the guidance in the Spring there will be a range of events in 2010 which will allow practitioners from all over Scotland to contribute to the national conversation on outdoor learning and to share practice.

More details of the guidnace document, national events and the online resource will be posted soon.

Delighted to see the status LTS and national government is giving to the outdoors as a context for Curriculum for Excellence.
East Ayrshire await the Framework with great enthusiasm and would like to invite LTS to hold one of their outdoor learning regional events in East Ayrshire.

Hi Willie, thanks for your comment. We are very pleased with the support outdoor learning is receiving from all quarters. It is hoped that the framework will build even more momentum, and that the regional events will keep awareness levels high.

As you know, Outdoor Learning is a hugely powerful context for delivering CfE. Hopefully we can all spread the word, far and wide!

Thanks for your invite to East Ayrshire…we’ll be in touch!

    Regards,

    Ryan

Would be great get more national advice to drive OL forward.

Hopefully I will be able to attend an event.I would also hope COSLA and HT associations etc can get involved an try out climbing on a portable tower, I have access to one, or go for a canoe paddle on a loch on the day of the event.

We are currently developing an outdoor learning zone for our shared campus school. We are seeking advice on the best use of land and space to maximise the learning opportunities for all our pupils across the curriculum. We look forward to tapping into this resource.

Hi Nick, it would be great to see you at one of the events. Please come and say hi. As for the climbing tower, yes it would be good fun. We are also trying to enable practitioners to see the broader spectrum of outdoor learning. From within the school/centre grounds, to an extended trip abroad.

Hi Morag, it’s great to hear that your setting is being so proactive in creating accessible and sustainable provision for outdoor learning. It would be great to hear how you get on in the future with the project. Best of luck!

Now that our funding has been approved we are planning the launch of our Power Off and Learn Outdoors (POLO) initiative for Grange Campus Kilmarnock. We would welcome any support or direction from the LO team to ensure the best possible learning experiences for our young people.
