Saving SLF events as iCalendar files

We have recently introduced the facility to let users of the Scottish Learning Festival (SLF) website transfer seminar details to a range of popular online calendars such as Outlook and Hotmail.

The SLF website allows users to save seminar details to a ‘wish list’, as part of the booking process. Users can now click on a link on the wish list page to save their choice of seminars to an iCalendar (.ics) file on their computer. This iCalendar file can then be uploaded into the most popular calendar applications and websites such as Microsoft Outlook, Hotmail Calendar, Yahoo! Calendar BETA, 30 boxes and Apple’s iCal. Unfortunately, the files cannot currently be uploaded to Google Calendar.

The method for uploading the file to the various calendars varies but generally appears under a button or heading of “Subscribe” or “Import”. For example, in Hotmail Calendar, clicking the Subscribe link in the header takes you to a page where you can “Import from an ICS file”.

If this facility proves to be useful it could be added to other parts of the online service where events appear.
