Nova Scotia Study Visit Announced

LTS is inviting applications from Scottish teachers for a SCIPD group study visit to Nova Scotia, Canada, in October 2009.

The theme is Homecoming, and the teaching of culture and history, and takes advantage of the shared history and cultural expression of Scotland and Nova Scotia. This visit complements the Scottish Government’s Homecoming 2009 programme.

International education work underway in schools

Minister for Schools and Skills, Keith Brown, visited Fintry Primary School in Stirlingshire and Bishopbriggs Academy in East Dunbartonshire yesterday to see the innovative, international education work underway in both schools.

Mr Brown said:

‘By working with the Gambia, pupils at Fintry Primary are developing a good range of global citizenship skills.

‘…Last year, Bishopbriggs Academy signed an agreement with the Goethe Institute which aims to make the school a centre of excellence for the teaching and learning of German and become a model for other schools in Scotland and throughout the globe.’

‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by Beijing Film Academy

The French Society for Scottish Studies conference announcement

The Société Française d’Études Écossaises, in conjunction with the University of St Andrews and the University of Strathclyde, is pleased to announce the theme for its 2009 conference will be ‘Exile and Return: Context and Comparisons’.

The conference will be held from September 10th to 12th at the University of St Andrews. It will examine aspects of Scottish migration, emigration and the formation of Scottish expatriate communities abroad in both the past and present.

Jules Verne programme

 The French Ministry of Education has launched a mobility programme for primary and secondary teachers called Jules Verne.

Up to 300 teachers throughout France will spend the year 2009-2010 in a school abroad. The programme, of which a full description in English is attached, is entirely funded by the French Ministry of Education.

Schoolovision 2009

Through the British Council’s eTwinning project, an East Lothian teacher has created his own version of the Eurovision song contest that has seen his school engage with 30 schools across Europe.

Inspired by both the Eurovision Song Contest and the European Year of Creativity and Innovation Yester Primary School teacher Michael Purves decided to set up Schoolovision 2009.
Each school was asked to enter a song that was representative of their country and recorded a video of it which they then uploaded to the project website.

New international opportunities for Scottish schools

Lecture on Chinese Literature
