CILT launches new LAFTAs

CILT, the National Centre for Languages has just launched the next Languages and Film Talent Awards (LAFTAs) competition, which offers the perfect chance for you to test your creativity and have some fun with languages.
The LAFTAs is a national competition inviting 13-21 year olds to make short films about the importance of languages.

Shawlands Academy wins Excellence in Languages prize

Shawlands Academy cooked up a winning entry at a recent competition for schools in Glasgow aimed at getting pupils actively learning about employability and enterprise skills through the use of modern languages.

The Glasgow International Job Centre competition set pupils aged 14 from eleven secondary schools the task of investigating and gathering all the information needed to recruit someone for a job in another country – a task made more difficult by the fact they had to do all of it in the language of their chosen country.

Celebrate the Success of Scotland’s Schools.

The Awards highlight best practice in Scottish classrooms, celebrate schools and acknowledge the dedicated individuals who devote their lives to helping young people fulfil their potential.  Entry to the Awards is open to all publicly funded schools, including secondary, primary, nursery and special schools. Acting for Camera in the Western Isles

Are you interested in learning new skills relevant to the developing media industry?

Do you have you an interest in the Gaelic language?

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Cultural Co-ordinator Service has a special interest in Gaelic drama and media. With funding from Enterprise in Education, it will offer an ‘Acting for Camera’ short residential course to secondary school pupils with an active interest in Gaelic drama.

This exciting learning opportunity will use contemporary professionals and modern facilities and will be made available to secondary pupils living in the Western Isles. The course will take place in Stornoway at the beginning of the Easter Holidays 2009 (end of March 2009).

Translation graduates to get industry experience

CILT seeks innovative language projects for Europe-wide award

The search in on for the UK’s most innovative language projects,  applications are open for next year’s European Award for Languages.

Schools, colleges, adult education and community projects can apply for the prestigious Award ahead of the deadline on 30 January 2009.

The European Award for Languages is a Europe-wide initiative which recognises creative ways to improve the quality of language teaching, motivate students, and make the best of available resources. To qualify for an Award, language projects must provide an inspiration to others, be replicable, and involve any language other than English.

Funding: The Lefèvre Trust

The Lefèvre Trust provides funding to support innovative projects between young people in France and the UK. It aims to improve understanding between the UK and France by enabling young people aged 11-19 to visit a partner group and further develop a joint venture.

Funding is available for groups of young people from across the UK and France. All groups are eligible to apply; youth groups, extra-curricular clubs, sports teams, school groups, theatre troupes, arts organisations and so on.

T4 show: Je Suis Un Rockstar

In a new Saturday morning TV series on Channel 4, twelve young people use their language skills to compete for the ultimate work experience in the music industry: the job of a ‘fixer’ at a huge summer festival.

This is part of an integrated marketing campaign from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCFS) to encourage young people to study MFL after the age of 14.

New toolkit supports business language champions

Regional Language Network (RLN) London has launched a toolkit to share motivating activities and ideas with businesses and schools interested in working in partnership to encourage language learning.

The toolkit includes samples of activities carried out by recognised Business Language Champions, together with supporting materials and advice which can help in building long-term partnerships between schools and businesses.
