CILT launches new LAFTAs

CILT, the National Centre for Languages has just launched the next Languages and Film Talent Awards (LAFTAs) competition, which offers the perfect chance for you to test your creativity and have some fun with languages.
The LAFTAs is a national competition inviting 13-21 year olds to make short films about the importance of languages.

Lack of native English interpreters threatens European Commission

CILT reports:The European Commission’s interpreting service faces a potential succession crisis of linguists with English as a native language, according to a statement released today. Without an increase in the number of qualified graduates, the EU Institutions are set to lose at least one third of their English language interpreters by 2015 due to retirement.

Created by the Goethe-Institut to mark the 25th anniversary of R.W. Fassbinder’s death in 2007 , this exhibition consists of 8 prints of original German film posters (The Marriage of Maria Braun; Fear Eats the Soul; Veronica Voss; Lola; Effie Briest; Katzelmacher; Martha; Lili Marleen), and 12 statements by international film directors about Fassbinder’s work and its influence on them. (Fatih Akin, Ferid Boughedir, Atom Egoyan, Aki Kaurismaki, Stanley Kwan, Mike Leigh, Jack Lewis, Francois Ozon, Chan-Wook Park, Thomas Piard, Istvan Szabo, Dinko Tucakovic.

EC competition challenges young translators

The European Commission have announced that the Juvenes Translatores competition will be taking place in 2008 for the second year running.

The 2008 Juvenes Translatores competition will be held on 27 November at secondary schools in each of the EU’s 27 Member States, and will be open to all pupils born in 1991. One winner from each Member State will be invited to attend the award ceremony in Brussels in early 2009, where they will have the chance to meet some of the Commission’s staff translators.

Gaelic gets creative with new centre

The Herald reports that an £8m centre for Gaelic creative industries aimed at supplying talent and training to the new Gaelic digital channel is due to be opened by First Minister Alex Salmond on Skye today.

Fas – Gaelic for growth – is the latest addition to Skye’s Gaelic College, Sabhal Mor Ostaig, and will provide a state-of-the-art creative/ media environment, including a full broadcast-standard digital television recording studio, sound-recording studio,theatre and post- production facilities.

Classrooms to boost Chinese links

A series of special units designed to boost Scotland’s links with China is to be opened in schools across the country. The Confucius Classrooms aim to give pupils lessons in Chinese language and culture.

They will also be used to organise trips to China and develop links with Chinese people living in Scotland. Education Secretary Fiona Hyslop has opened the first Confucius Classroom at Perth High School.

With China’s economic boom, demand for fluent speakers of Chinese languages is increasing in the business world.

The aim is to develop eight classrooms across 14 local authorities to allow pupils and teachers from around Scotland to benefit.

Cambridge drops language demand

The BBC reports that Cambridge University has dropped its requirement for applicants to have a language GCSE because too few pupils now take them.

Independent schools still tend to offer languages, despite them being no longer compulsory beyond the age of 14. However, only 17% of state primary schools offer them and less than half of GCSE pupils overall take them. Cambridge is constantly under pressure to increase the share of students it takes from state schools.
