Low number of schools opting to take new baccalaureate

The Herald: The Scottish Qualifications Authority said only 13 secondary schools out of a total of 376 had registered for the languages qualification by the deadline at the beginning of October – less than 4% of the total.

Scottish baccalaureate gets thumbs up

The Scotsman reports: Scottish qualifications have been given another boost as the project element of the new baccalaureate, in schools from August, has been rated as the equivalent of half an Advanced Higher by Ucas.

The Scottish Languages Baccalaureate

From SQA: Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning has revealed the constituent parts of the new Scottish Languages Baccalaureate which has been created to build on the success of the Advanced Higher.

New baccalaureate exam unveiled to boost language studies

The Scotsman reports:  Pupils will be able to study new qualifications in science and languages from next year, the government has announced.

Fiona Hyslop, the education minister, also revealed that baccalaureates in social subjects and art might be created in future.

LANGUAGESPUPILS choose two languages from: French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Classical Greek, Latin, Learners’ Gaelic, Urdu, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Plus: English, English for speakers of other languages or Gaelic and an interdisciplinary project.

Any two of the languages chosen should be at Advanced Higher, with one at Higher. The project will be at Advanced Higher level and graded A, B or C.

For example, a candidate might choose Advanced Higher English and French, Higher Spanish and the project.

Scottish CILT and HMIE national conference

Date for your diary: 27 January 2009 at the Stirling Management Centre.

A joint Scottish CILT/HMIE conference which will showcase best practice identified during trialling of Curriculum for Excellence and from visits by HMIE and Scottish CILT.

The conference themes:

  •  transition
  • inter-disciplinary work
  • learners’ experiences
  • planning

Local authorities will be invited to nominate up to five participants, mainly teachers. If you are interested in attending, please get in touch with the person in your local authority who has responsibility for modern languages or for Curriculum for Excellence.
