UK schools celebrate a world of languages on 26 September

Learners around the UK have been counting down this week – in French, Spanish, Turkish and Mandarin! – to the European Day of Languages (EDL) on Friday 26, when children and adults around the continent will be taking part in a language celebration. Run by the Council of Europe and coordinated in the UK by CILT, the Day is a Europe-wide celebration of all the world’s languages and a chance to kick start language learning for children and adults alike.More details of all registered events can be found on the Council of Europe website.

Further information about the European Day of Languages in the UK, and for resources, ideas and activities can be found on the CILT website.

Learning languages is certainly a good thing, but a neglected question is: which language should I learn? I hope you’ll allow me to sat that there’s a case for learning Esperanto, the planned international language. It has its speaker population scattered over the globe. The Esperanto Association of Britain is offering a free postal course in the language. Details (and the first lesson) are available from Esperanto Association of Britain,

I hope that the “European Day of Languages” will encourage many people to learn a new language. Especially in the United Kingdom where the interest in learning languages seems to be declining.

You may know that four schools in Britain have introduced Esperanto, the neutral international language, in order to test its propaedeutic values?

The pilot project is being monitored by the University of Manchester, and I believe the project deserves academic appraisal.
