LAFTA winners announced

BBC: UK adults ‘forget school French’

The BBC reports on a survey that suggests half of adults in the UK have forgotten the languages they learned at school. Two fifths of the 1,000 people polled by ICM regretted not keeping up their language skills after leaving school. Most people thought languages were important in everyday life and 52% said they were important to a career. The survey findings are published as children across Europe are celebrating language learning as part of the European Day of Languages.

UK schools celebrate a world of languages on 26 September

Learners around the UK have been counting down this week – in French, Spanish, Turkish and Mandarin! – to the European Day of Languages (EDL) on Friday 26, when children and adults around the continent will be taking part in a language celebration. Run by the Council of Europe and coordinated in the UK by CILT, the Day is a Europe-wide celebration of all the world’s languages and a chance to kick start language learning for children and adults alike.More details of all registered events can be found on the Council of Europe website.

SALT Conference

Bookings are now being taken for the forthcoming SALT conference on November 1, 2008 at the University of Stirling. Brochures and application forms have been mailed out to secondary schools, SALT members, local authorities, FE, HE and TEIs this week and the brochure and application form can be downloaded from the Scottish CILT and SALT websites at the following addresses:

Please note that booking procedures have changed this year so make sure that the application notes and brochure information are read carefully before submitting your application. Bookings can now be made by credit card as well as cheque and bankers draft payments. New director of Sabhal Mor Ostaig

The Press and Journal reports: THE new director of Sabhal Mor Ostaig, the Gaelic college on Skye, is Boyd Robertson, head of language education and acting head of the department of curricular studies at Strathclyde University. He succeeds Professor Norman Gillies, who retires at the end of this year.
