Online consultation on languages in the EU

The European Commission has just launched an online consultation aimed at both organisations and individuals about its work concerning the role and place of languages in the EU. This multilingualism consultation is available in 22 languages and will remain open until the 15 November 2007.

Digital Dialects contains interactive activities for learning languages and links to resources for study. It covers a great range of languages and new activities have recently been added to the Albanian, Farsi, Finnish and Swahili sections.

UK and China sign e-learning deal

An online education initiative between the UK and China is being launched - with plans to provide ‘e-learning’ for 20 million Chinese students, reports the BBC website.

Gaelic college praised by education inspectors

The only college in Scotland offering programmes solely in Gaelic has been praised by HM Inspectors of Education, reports this article on the Herald website.

A STUDY is being carried out at Edinburgh University to see whether being bilingual affects the way people read in English. Researchers are testing people who speak English and another language to try to find out exactly how they process English words.

Free resources still available for EDL

CILT, the National Centre for Languages, has made available thousands of free resource packs containing two double sided posters and four sheets of ‘hello’ stickers. Lots of languages are featured in different places and it contains hidden furry LinguaBats!
