SLF Extra – Using iPads in Music education

John McLaughlin from Taylor High School, North Lanarkshire opened the Scottish Learning Festival this morning with an inspirational seminar on the use of iPads in the secondary music classroom.
With the emphasis on pupil engagement and creativity, John had his “virtual S1 pupils” (4 delegates) playing Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water within 5 minutes of picking up their iPads, much to the annoyance of the seminar next door!
It was a stunning demonstration of the enormous potential of the iPad in the music classroom, encouraging pupils’ creativity and making music appreciation, composition and performance more accessible to all.
The impact of the loaned iPads from Education Scotland has been marked in John’s class, with pupils who “haven’t got a scooby” making music, composing ringtones and participating in interdisciplinary learning by selling their ringtones in an Enterprise activity.
Using Apps such as GarageBand and AmpliTube, pupils from S1 to S6 can multitask on the iPad, recording their own podcast, researching its content on the web, and then use the text application to write their script.
For music composition, pupils can plug real instruments in to the iPad. Then, as John says, “the best thing is pupils can share their compositions and ideas with their friends using Bluetooth and iTunes.”
For early years and pupils with Additional Support Needs two applications were highlighted – Beatwave and Soundrop. John gave the seminar a demonstration of the amazing potential of these Apps for young learners and those with physical or learning difficulties.
This was a ringing endorsement of using the iPad in the music classroom from a real, hands-on music practitioner and the audience were reluctant to leave, Mr McLaughlin definitely left the crowd wanting more.

With only three weeks to go until the event itself, SLF Extra has been launched today, via the National Site in Glow. The Glow group has been designed with Glow users from all over Scotland in mind, not just those who are able to attend the festival.
Glow TV will aim to bring you as much content as we possibly can, with all keynote speeches streamed live through Glow and sign-ups and links available through the GlowTV schedule. Glow TV will also present a number of ‘Best of SLF’ broadcasts from our temporary studio at the SECC, where we aim to capture the key discussion topics from the Keynote speeches and allow Glow users to take part (through the Glow meet chat pod) in our studio discussion with our panel in Glasgow.
If you cannot take part live at the time of broadcast, there is, of course, the ‘Watch Again’ facility in Glow TV, where all broadcasts will be available after the event. SLF Extra also has a discussion forum, with a number of topics already raised to invite Glow users to engage in discussions that SLF raises. In addition to that, the Glow team will be armed with video cameras and audio recording devices to capture as much content as we can and have a festival team lined up to get that content to you through SLF Extra on Glow.
We will blog and we will tweet and, though we will probably end up with sore feet, we will make sure we bring Glow users as much of SLF as we can. SLF Extra is where you go to find it.

The Arts Get Glowing: Arts Across the Curriculum

The Scottish Arts Council and Learning and Teaching Scotland have joined forces to bring arts education online through Glow. As a result of this partnership, a new post and project have been created to explore Glow’s potential to support innovative approaches to learning and teaching through the arts.
I have recently joined the Glow Team as Development Officer (Arts) and I’m hugely excited about this project’s potential to enable artists, performers and writers and Scotland’s schools to work and learn together in ways that have never been possible before. Glow is breaking down barriers and making learning experiences and opportunities more widely accessible – the recent Anthony Horowitz and Oscar Stringer Glow Meet events and the Willie Rodger print project are just a few examples of the exciting work that is already going on via Glow.
Over the next 22 months I will be working with selected Scottish Arts Council funded arts organisations on a number of ambitious demonstration projects, to be announced later this year, which will trial new ways of learning and will show how creativity and the arts are a fantastic way of supporting Curriculum for Excellence.
The project will provide CPD opportunities for both teachers and arts practitioners to work together to develop ideas, projects and resources. I am keen to make contact with teachers, cultural co-ordinators and local arts teams who would like to be involved so please do get in touch – I’ll be delighted to hear from you.
Look out for a new national Glow Group for the project which will highlight developments and opportunities providing a focal point for all related activity and a place to collaborate and share good practice. The project will also be showcased at the Scottish Learning Festival on 23 September.
