Wha’s Like Us? A New Homecoming Group with an EAL Focus

Comments: none

New in the Homecoming National Group is ‘Wha’s Like Us?’ This group is aimed at classes where there are pupils who have come from different countries to live in Scotland. It will allow pupils living all over Scotland to talk about their experiences living in this country, along with their classmates.

There will be regular monthly topics for classes to work on together, and a chance for pupils to upload their work, chat, discuss and Glow Meet.

The first topic will be school life, starting next week, Tuesday the 5th of May. The future topics will be chosen by the group members. Any class, primary or secondary, can get involved - just follow the instructions on the group.

Access requests are now open - come in and explore and think about how you’d like to use the group. It’s the intention that the group will change and grow to meet the needs of the classes using it, so essentially it can be designed by the users collaboratively. Hope to see you there soon! Join Wha’s Like Us and start linking across the country!

Scots Phrasebook on Glow

scots-phrasebook1.PNGIf you’re looking for something quick and fun for your class to do on Glow, why not stop by the Scots Phrasebook Glow Group, within the national Homecoming Group. You can upload some favourite Scottish words, or introduce the rest of the country to phrases used in your area.

Simply add your word to the list under one of the headings and tell us what it means, and where it’s from (if you know).

Each tab has its own picture gallery where you can submit pictures to bring your words to life, or why not have your class make posters illustrating their favourite Scottish words, take pictures of them and share them here? In this way, they can display their work to other classes around the country! You can also upload pupil work based around Scottish words into the document store, be it videos, documents, podcasts or anything else.

Have a look today and see what the weans, peedie bairns and wee yins can come up with!

Celebrate Scotland’s year of homecoming in your classroom

Glow is providing Primary School teachers with the chance to partake in a ‘Homecoming’ topic with schools across the whole of Scotland. In January there will be an on-line classroom where teachers from P4-7 can contribute to, and get ideas from, that will have great potential for cross-curricular teaching and learning.

As a teacher, you will get the best of the ideas by planning with teachers from across Scotland – just submit ideas and they will be collated and shown to everyone else. Each week there will be on line challenges that you can take part in, and you can share the work your class produce on Glow as well.  See what other school across Scotland are doing, and encourage your pupils to peer assess other people’s work as well.

There will also be additional opportunities for you to use technology to enhance the children’s learning, and the on-line classroom will show you how to do this through tutorials and advice. For example – have you ever thought about using animation to inspire the children? The on-line classroom will show you where you can get software (even for free!), provide planning resources, and also show you how to use it.

If you want to be a part of this innovative way of teaching, email Sat Bance on s.bance@LTScotland.org.uk to express your interest. In the meantime, share your thoughts and ideas on the discussion forum.
