On Thursday 27 and Friday 28 August 2009, a group of Secondary Maths teachers and Primary teachers from a variety of Local Authorites,
met at Stirling Management Centre for the Maths Building Glow Communities event.
The teachers worked in small groups to build Glow Groups that provide ideas and resources that can be used by teachers around the country as part of their learning and teaching.
The Groups are sub groups of the national Numeracy and Mathematics Glow Group and very much take on board the thinking behind Curriculum for Excellence, providing contexts for teaching and learning that will allow teachers to address a range of Mathematics and Numeracy outcomes together, rather than in isolation.
For example, there is a Glow Group created on the theme of Planning a Holiday, and another for Buying a Car, each of which can be used to work on a range of outcomes including Time, Money and Data & Analysis.
All Glow users around the country have Reader access to all of the eight groups that were created. However, if a teacher and their pupils would like to participate in collaborative projects with others, there is information within each Glow Group explaining how they can do that. Teachers can also request Contributor access to enable them to add to the resources within the Groups.
The two day event was extremely enjoyable, with teachers leaving feeling inspired and keen to continue their Glow usage even more within their own classrooms. It was felt that the event gave a very worthwhile opportunity to meet other likeminded people, make connections for ongoing collaboration, and find out more about Glow itself.
You can find out about future Building Glow Communities events by visiting the Glow Scotland website.

Thirty English Teachers from across Scotland brought their skills and knowledge of Glow to Stirling Management Centre to help build a Glow community over the course of two days.
The purpose of the event was to build various subject specific Glow Groups that can be used by English practitioners throughout Scotland providing them with an opportunity to work with others, make lasting connections and share knowledge and ideas which are transferable across schools and authorities throw Glow.
The practitioners, all at different stages with Glow, were just as enthusiastic as each other when they worked in teams to create Glow Groups. The groups included; Scots language, war poetry, personal study, Macbeth, The boy in the striped pyjamas and higher critical essays. Practitioners were given a blank canvas to work from in Glow with ready-made basic Glow Groups to be developed.
True to form, each group communicated well, taking a strategic approach to the planning process with much discussion of what each page should look like and contain. Groups were constantly thinking of the end user when building the groups, taking careful consideration of how the pupils would view the site and how easy they follow the activities in the Group.
The groups created are available for all to see in the Building Glow Communities tab of the Literacy and English Glow Group. If you find any of these groups useful and would like to contribute, you can simply request access through the e-mail address provided in each Group and we would encourage you to do so.
Judith Weston from Earlston High in the Scottish Borders said: “It’s been a fantastic opportunity to take two days out to build these groups.
“I’ll be going back to the classroom with a Glow Group packed with resources for English teachers and creative work for children.”
Michael Stephenson from Inveralmond Community High, West Lothian said: “we have built our group through the eyes of the children so they can follow the instructions, navigate easily and upload work tasks for teachers to edit.”

Do you teach P6 or P7? Are you planning to work on World War 2, the Victorians, Scotland, favourite authors, Global Citizenship and international education, Astronomy, or even planning to work on a European Tour Guide Mission?
People always ask me what they can ‘do’ in Glow, or where they can find ‘resources’ or ‘people’ to help them in their work. To help this, we put together a series of events that would bring people together to share ideas, plans and resources related to either stages or curricular areas. We called them ‘Building Glow Communities‘, as they’d put people in touch with others that had a common interest or area of expertise.
We had the first event a couple of weeks ago for P6-7 teachers, and you can find some of the groups created at the event linked above. Tomorrow and Wednesday will see the second event take place for teachers of English, with a number of other events planned to take place at the beginning of next session. Watch out for a blog post in the near future sharing what was created at the English teachers event!
