The Arts Get Glowing: Arts Across the Curriculum

img_0509_2blog

The Scottish Arts Council and Learning and Teaching Scotland have joined forces to bring arts education online through Glow. As a result of this partnership, a new post and project have been created to explore Glow’s potential to support innovative approaches to learning and teaching through the arts.

I have recently joined the Glow Team as Development Officer (Arts) and I’m hugely excited about this project’s potential to enable artists, performers and writers and Scotland’s schools to work and learn together in ways that have never been possible before. Glow is breaking down barriers and making learning experiences and opportunities more widely accessible – the recent Anthony Horowitz and Oscar Stringer Glow Meet events and the Willie Rodger print project are just a few examples of the exciting work that is already going on via Glow.

Over the next 22 months I will be working with selected Scottish Arts Council funded arts organisations on a number of ambitious demonstration projects, to be announced later this year, which will trial new ways of learning and will show how creativity and the arts are a fantastic way of supporting Curriculum for Excellence.

The project will provide CPD opportunities for both teachers and arts practitioners to work together to develop ideas, projects and resources. I am keen to make contact with teachers, cultural co-ordinators and local arts teams who would like to be involved so please do get in touch – I’ll be delighted to hear from you.

Look out for a new national Glow Group for the project which will highlight developments and opportunities providing a focal point for all related activity and a place to collaborate and share good practice. The project will also be showcased at the Scottish Learning Festival on 23 September.

Hi, I am a music teacher in primary schools in and around Kirkcudbright and primary music development officer in Dumfries & Galloway.
I would like to be involved with any group in developing ideas, projects and/or resources.
At the moment I have music galleries on glow for all 6 of my schools and regularly upload recordings of their class work on to their sites for the the rest of the school to hear. I am trying to encourage and support my other colleagues to develop music sites for their schools on Glow as well.
We have our own primary music specialist site and we have started uploading resources for others to share.
Looking forward to hearing from you,

    Kate

    Hi Kate

It’s great to hear about the work you are doing with music in primary schools via Glow. Over the summer I will be working with arts organisations to introduce them to Glow. I note that you would like to be involved in developing projects, ideas and resources and will keep you posted as things develop and opportunities arise – many thanks for getting in touch and for your interest in the project. All the best for now,

    Julia

    Hi
I am a specialist Art & Design teacher at Dalry Primary School in North Ayrshire. I would love to get involved with any projects, ideas as GLOW is just getting going in the school and it would be great for the pupils to access an Arts site. We have our own Media Suite within the school therefore it would be enterprising for the pupils to upload their work and see what other scottish schools are doing through the arts. I teach all years from P1-P7 and the possibilities are endless. I look forward to the future with this project.
    Kind regards
    Lesley Sim

    Hi Julia

I am a practising Ceramic artist currently undertaking a nine month period of Creative Development funded by SAC.

Having worked, freelance, over the last few years, with teachers and children from nursery, primary, secondary and schools for children with additional support needs I am well aware of how beneficial art workshops can be for all.

Almost all of the projects I was involved in were thanks to the hard work and dedication from various Councils, Edinburgh Creative Links, team, Cultural Co ordinators Programme and other education bodies.

As an artist I am committed to art education and fully intend offering my skills and experience as a tutor once again in the future.

I would be happy to exchange ideas, share experiences and advice to arts practitioners considering working in schools with teachers and children.

I would be grateful if you could keep me informed of Glow developments.

    Hi Lorraine,

Great to hear from you. Thanks for letting me and other Glow Scotland readers know about your work and your enthusiasm for working in education, and also your willingness to share your experiences with others. A key element of the Glow Arts Project will be professional development as arts and learning professionals work and learn together, sharing ideas and developing practice and resources through Glow. This blog will be the best place to follow news of how the project is developing, but I will certainly keep you posted and will let others know that you are keen to help. It’s great to hear that you have been working closely with the cultural co-ordinators and local arts teams network. They are playing a significant role in ensuring that the arts are regarded as a key aspect of Curriculum for Excellence provision.

    Hi Julia,

I am a primary teacher (currently P3/4) with a Community Arts degree in Music, Drama, Dance and Visual Arts. I went into primary teaching with the ambition of teaching a curriculum through the arts but this has been far from the reality I have experienced so far!
I am therefore so excited about the opportunities that your role and GLOW can generate to enhance the experential development of our young people and would love to be involved in any capacity.
As I take up a new post this August, I’m looking forward to actively promoting, enhancing and using my skills to teach through the arts (although I am unsure as the the GLOW status of my new school).

    Best wishes,

    Louise

    Hi julia
glad to see contributions to the blog. Sorry I couldn’t make it to one of the open days over the summer but my colleagues went instead. I’ve added to the discussion board on the national expressive arts glowsite re a dedicated cultural co-ordinator site. Keep up the good work.
    all the best

    Hi Julia,

I was really excited to hear about your appointment and would like to support your work. I am headteacher of a primary school in Highland. Please let us know if we can contribute towards the success of the Glow project.

    Hi Dave

Great to hear from you; thank you for your positive message about the Glow Arts Project – Co-Create. Delighted to hear that you are keen to be involved.

Things are going very well with the project. We received 37 applications for funding from Scottish Arts Council funded arts organisations and will be announcing 6-8 demonstration projects in early January. We are aiming for a good balance of artforms, age levels and geographical spread across the projects.

Watch this space for news of what the successful projects will be and how your school can get involved.

    All best wishes

    Julia

    Dear Julia
I attended your seminar for arts orgs in Dundee a few months ago and am now involved with a new SAC Inspire-funded project for young people called Love Music Festival. We will be producing music resources for school teachers across the 4-18 age range and would love to be able to utilise GLOW to distribute these resources as widely as possible. Would this be feasible and what are our next steps?

    Many thanks
    Judith
