East Dunbartonshire transition Glow group success
February 3rd, 2009Myself and John Mulgrew the Chair of the Board of Directors of LTS were lucky enough to be invited recently to see some of the fantastic work being done in East Dunbartonshire using the tools inside Glow.
We visited two Primary and one Secondary school where using Glow is already making a huge difference to both staff and pupils.
Just one of the many examples we saw was a transition Glow group set up by Vicky McKenzie from Lairdsland primary school earlier this year which has proved such a success that its use is now to become a permanent fixture.
Each of the P7 classes in all of the feeder primaries for Lenzie Academy (including one outwith the Local Authority) have been given the chance over the last few months to contact both staff and pupils in Lenzie, in preparation for their move to the ‘big school’.
The departments in Lenzie Academy have embraced the opportunity that Glow has given them to make early connections with the children, which each department posting a variety of tasks for them to complete relating to some of the work the new S1s will be expected to do when they arrive.
When I spoke to the primary children themselves, they told me that one of the best things about the group is that it stops them worrying so much about moving to secondary school. Using a discussion board they are able to ask the current senior pupils at Lenzie Academy questions and this puts their minds at rest. The senior pupils are equally happy to be given this extra responsibility and no query is left unanswered.
I could go into great detail about how this one group embraces the four capacities from Curriculum for Excellence – but I think that it speaks for itself.
