What Internet do we want?

Comments: none

garden.jpgFor those of us in the Scottish education community, the provision of network & internet access to support learning, requires ongoing consideration of the issues pertaining to effective access, security, filtering, tracking, risk, Responsible Use, Duty of Care etc.. Developing technologies, such as learner provided devices and requirements for access to tools and content such as social networks and video sharing, are drivers which are creating debate in our community (eg on Andrew’s blog) on how to effectively provide for developing learner and teacher requirements by understanding and managing risk. We do need to progress the debate and suggestions for such are welcomed. It is also worth noting that wider determinations of the future of the Internet will impact on the internet future we provide for our students in school, one current thesis by Jonathan Zittrain’s in his recent book, ‘The Future of the Internet - And How to Stop It’, with counterpoint by Adam Thierer, and comment by Bill Thompson, makes an interesting contribution.
