The quality statement on CPDFind

Comments: none

This post has been provided by Anne McGhee, a consultant who has been working with the CPD team to support CPDFind and other online CPD initiatives. It is hoped to inform and start a wee debate on what we would like CPD providers to tell us about themselves before we will part with our hard-earned CPD budgets!

“It is important that this part of the provider’s details be completed as it may have implications on the uptake of your services.  Although many authorities and schools implement their own evaluation procedures it will be important for providers to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to quality and improvement. As a rule of thumb, the quality statement may include the following:

  • Statement of the quality of tutors eg all tutors are former teachers and are GTC registered.
  • Details of your evaluation mechanisms; the format they take, how you implement and review them to ensure quality of CPD opportunity development and delivery.
  •  Details of your commitment to quality and improvement through participating in CPD relevant to your field
  •  Membership of Professional Bodies
  •  Quality Standard Awards eg Investors in People, SQA approved
  •  Reviews undertaken by external assessors eg HMIE”

As always comments are very much appreciated on the blog or by email to cpdanswers@ltscotland.org.uk

CPDReflect progress

Considerable progress has been made on the CPDReflect front over the last few months. Here are some of the details and decisions made.

  • We have agreed a detailed design and 3T are developing the solution as I write (more pictures soon!)
  • LTScotland has agreed to host the tool on their servers to let us get maximum benefit from integrating this product with other LTS online services (including our very own CPDFind)
  • We will exemplify the Standard for Initial Teacher Education and the Standard for Full Registration in the initial phase.
  • CPDReflect will only be readily available to users of Glow

The CPD Team are looking to improve the way that policy is developed and practice is shared and making even stronger links between the two. We are very keen to involve as wide a range of practitioners in our work as early as possible.

Flexible Routes to Headship pilot programme

The Flexible Routes to Headship pilot programme has been operational for 9 months involving 30 participants across 5 local authorities. A unique feature of the programme is the support provided for each participant by a Professional Development Coach. This support is currently focussed on each participant’s Professional Learning Plan constructed following self evaluation against the Standard for Headship.

National review of PRD

Comments: none

The National CPD Team are undertaking a review of the Professional Review and Development (PRD) process. We recommend that the Standard for Full Registration be central to this review and the cornerstone of PRD and CPD for the Scottish teaching profession. For some post holders there are other Standards which will be the focus of their PRD but the SFR is the baseline professional Standard and should be placed in a fundamental central position.

Arion group

I had a fun session yesterday with a group of educators from Turkey, Poland, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Spain, Catalonia, the Netherlands, Norway, Bulgaria, Austria and Germany. The group were here as part of the Arion project and were led by Vivien Bruce of North Ayrshire Council. The session was led by Ewan McIntosh of LTScotland and my contribution was to give them a sneak preview of the work of the CPD Team and the CPD Scotland project. The plenary was most interesting, hearing how much we all have in common! The actions we took away are summed up on Ewan’s blog . I also promised the group a list of references, so here they are.

Of CPD and seals!

Seals in Lerwick

I have just come back from doing some workshops on online CPD in Stornoway, Benbecula and Lerwick. I am struck by the real enthusiasm shown by many of the participants for online CPD. Together we looked at:

  • the values underlying the work of the CPD Team
  • how CPDFind can help reach the CPD that other sources can’t reach
  • how Glow will be used for collegiate and individual CPD
  • and how CPDReflect will help us gain an insight into our CPD needs.

I want to add my thanks to Donnie MacLeod and Dougie Hutcheon, CPD coordinators in the Western Isles and Shetland Islands and to all the other colleagues who made me (and my technology) most welcome.

And the seals? That was part of the view from my hotel room in Lerwick!

2 card trick!

4 stage cardThe CPD Team are on the road quite a bit these days from Scottish Borders to Shetland! To help promote some of our key messages, we have developed two different postcards.

The first card shows the 4 stages of CPD, as outlined in the Teacher for Excellence paper. On the flip side is how the 4-stage model can help in self-evaluation for Curriculum for Excellence.

The other card has access details for CPDFind and the CPD Scotland website.

If you would like an electronic copy of these cards, please contact Ruth at cpdanswers@ltscotland.org.uk.

CPDFind 2 - Bigger and better?

Comments: none

We have been hard at work developing a plan for what CPDFind will look like in the coming months. Here are the highlights…

General improvements to the system:

  • providing feedback to providers on ‘hits’ and ‘most wanted’ CPD
  • reporting of suggestions
  • help systems (including online tutorials)
  • improvements to the CPD opportunity

Is this the first spot?

CPDFind is designed in such a way that you can link directly to a specific opportunity descriptor. John Johnston from Sandaig primary recently wrote in the Connected Live blog about a CPD experience in Aberdour. He attended an event run by David Noble but he connected to the CPDFind descriptor for David’s course, Using the Social Web to develop the Four Capacities.

Thanks for that, John! There’s got be some sort of prize. Any thoughts?
