What happened at Be Very Afraid?

What a fantastic day today we have had at Stephen Heppell’s “Be Very Afraid”event at BAFTA in London. After a hectic day travelling we finally managed to get to BAFTA in Piccadily for the pre-event meeting. After that we all headed back to our hotels. The boys from St Columba’s PS in Dundee who came with us to London had never flown before and they had never been to London! The apprehension and excitement in their voices as the plane engines roared for take-off at Dundee airport was heard throughout the plane, and the same happened as we landed at London City! Here is a short video of our time at the event:
Anyway, what an experience today was. Although the Be Very Afraid event was superb and packed with innovative, cutting-edge practice and bright sparky kids I could not help but feel inward glee at the way the boys from Dundee not only conducted themselves but also with how they demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the Nintendo DS device and the Dr Kawashima game they used. Their ability to convey the excitement, value and challenge they experienced during the project to such a wide and varied range of interested parties was a joy to behold. They were articulate, confident and accommodating and I’m sure that a great many people who spoke to them and took the oppoertunity to play the game managed to get a little insight in to what a positive experience this project was for them.
They really were a credit to their school and to the Consolarium’s work in trying to put LTS’ games-based-learning initiatives in the educational mix. Very well done to you both boys and to all the children from St Columba’s PS and the other schools involved for all their work and efforts.

[...] Consolarium wrote a fantastic post today on “What happened at Be Very Afraid?”Here’s ONLY a quick extract … ay the boys from Dundee not only conducted themselves but also with how they demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the Nintendo DS device and the Dr Kawashima game t hey used…. [...]
[...] Over on the Consolarium blog we see how pupils from a Dundee Primary School made a huge impact at this year’s Be Very Afraid event at Bafta, London. [...]
Can i just confirm how well the boys represented themselves – they chatted to major film producers, senior policy people, sceptical journalists, enthusiasts and many more and just infected them all equally with an enthusiasm for what they were doing.
the heart of the event is an opportunity for these senior folk to talk directly to our learners – not to see a ‘glossy’ set of slides, but to chat, and be shown, about their work. Without exception guests commented on the depth of understanding, energy and confidence that was everywhere in the event – but esp from Dundee! As you say, they were “articulate, confident and accommodating” and indeed insightful.
I can’t wait to see who you bring down next year Derek!
Hi there ,hope this finds you all well.
Im David`s mum Dawn and I just wanted to personally thank everyone for their kindness and generation toward the boys and also for taking such good care of them while they were with you.
Both had a wonderful time in London especially on the day itself and would love to do it all over again although after a long and well earned rest,as they put it…
We are all so very proud of them and very greatful to you for inviting them to be a part of this years “Be Very Afraid 4″ event.
Im sure it will be something they both talk about,as will we all, for many years to come.
It has been a superb experience not only for the two boys but also for the school and for the parents involved.
We would like to wish you all the very best for all future “Be Very Afraid” events to come..
One last message from the boys,”you should all be ” Very Afraid “as you might just bump into us again in the future…
Thankyou all once again..

Apologies , as you can see Im not very good at multi-tasking,(kids home work and writing a letter)
What I wanted to say was ”

One of those days…lol
Thanks again,
Dawn.
Thank you for those comments Dawn, it was a pleasure to have taken the boys to the event.
It was a delight to watch the video of the boys’ time at the ‘Be Very Afraid’ event. The whole experience of visiting London and communicating with delegates to this event will be an experience that they will never forget.
Well done to all the pupils who were involved in this project!
