The Naked Violin free download
23rd January
Thanks to Terry Brown for drawing my attention to Tasmin Little’s latest album of solo violin music entitled The Naked Violin, which she has made available as a free download. In addition to music there are also suggestions for classroom activities, information on each piece and an overview explaining what’s on offer. What I like about this presentation is the “Three Step Challenge” at the bottom of the webpage:
- Step 1 Listen to my spoken introduction and download my CD.
- Step 2 Take some time to listen and get to know these pieces. Then write to me and tell me what you like (or don’t like) about each piece.
- Step 3 Go to a concert, buy a CD or write and tell me what barriers still remain to prevent you from wanting to do either!
If live and recorded music are in as much crisis as we are led to believe, then it would be very interesting to know how those walking away explain their feelings to someone in the music business. I’m not sure whether Ms Little plans to share responses to the Three Step Challenge, as much of it will necessarily assume the form of private correspondence, but I’d imagine that many of us would be very interested in some description of the feedback. I intend to write to Ms Little but won’t post my thoughts here as that would undermine the intended process of individuals listening, thinking and responding for themselves.
Good things always come in threes and there are three works on the album:
- J. S. Bach’s Partita No. 3 in E BWV 1006
- Paul Patterson’s Luslawice Variations
- Eugène Ysaÿe’s Sonata No 3 in Dm “Ballade”
For those intending to burn the content onto a CD, there is also a downloadable cover (artwork, titles, composers’ dates etc.)

Here is the Press Release:
Press Release:
CLASSICAL MUSICIAN REACHES OUT TO TO HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS AUDIENCE VIA INTERNET (WEBCAST FILMED FOR SOUTH BANK SHOW)
Classical musician Tasmin Little will be broadcasting a performance of material from her recent free downloadable album “The Naked Violin” live from the IFDNRG/Showstreams Internet studios in Edinburgh on the 24th April.
The event will also be filmed by the South Bank Show as part of a documentary scheduled to be broadcast in June.
In line with Tasmin’s efforts to open the classical music world to a wider audience the broadcast will be aimed at reaching to the remotest parts of Scotland via the Internet.
Bringing her personal passion for classical music to new audiences.
In January 2008 Tasmin Little posed visitors to her site with a 3 step challenge: download and listen to her new CD for free, take some time to get to know the pieces and identify any barriers that remain for classical music.
This was a path no musician had ventured down before, not even the innovative rock giants Radiohead, who asked listeners to pay what they thought the recording was worth!

The webcast will be available worldwide on www.tasminlittle.org.uk
on Thursday, 24th April 2008 @ 19:00 (GMT+1)
Whilst this webcast will be available for anyone in the world to view, Tasmin
is particularly keen on reaching Scottish audiences outside the 7 cities which have traditionally had less exposure to the classical arena in the past.
In addition to the webcast, Tasmin will be participating in a video discussion live with viewers on what barriers still remain for classical music.
