Seeing the connexions
10th November
I’ve long been convinced of the benefits of connectivity in learning. Musical concepts can occasionally seem nebulous and resonance with any element of pupils’ more concrete subjects is a great ally. Comparisons between technique and PE or phrasing and language are usually embraced willingly.
Those involving Maths & Physics can tend to produce more glazing than Everest and Penicuik combined. This is not because the subjects themselves lack fascination – au contraire. I suspect it’s due to the fact that worthwhile reference might require more visual resources than serendipitous mention can usually call upon.
That’s why I was delighted to stumble upon Connexions, where Catherine Schmidt-Jones has posted many informative units on the mathematical and physical realities of music. Many contain problem solving. There are units on:
- timbre
- pitch
- the harmonic series
- octaves
- frequency, wavelength & pitch
- musical intervals – frequency and ratio
- music and math(s)
- sound & music
- sound & ears
- tuning systems
- amplitude & dynamics
- transverse & longitudinal waves
- talking about sound
- standing waves and musical instruments
- standing waves and wind instruments
- powers, roots and equal temperament
